I find the prevelance of Buddy Rich references interesting to say the least, but not surprising. Yes, at one time Mr. Rich was to some "The drummers drummer", but it wasnt for his inovative style, but for his ability to play the same pieces note for note, beat for beat. He really wasn't ahead of his time, just one of the best technician of his time. And had the most exposure. He was what I would call "technically perfect but aesthetically boring". Yes, he was powerful and fast, when he was young. But when he got older he lived on his rep. I wouldnt say he was the best drummer ever, just the one everyone knows about.
