Krupa taught Criss.

The best ones are up here but I would add Stewart Copeland and Charlie Watts.

I think Tommy Lee is the best drummer from an entertainment (seeing live) point of view. But not from a playing ability view.

Buddy Rich

If you have ever seen him you would know why he is the best. Bonham and Peart are great drummers, but Buddy Rich is the best.

It's a rare musician that is great during his time. Much rarer is one that is great ahead of his time. Buddy Rich was way ahead of his time.

Frosty ... Lee Michaels drummer in the late 60's early 70's.

Saw him at Fillmore West doing a drum solo using only his 'knuckles' (no sticks) until his taped up fingers bled ...

... it was awesome!

Buddy Rich is in his own category.
As for Rock and Roll drummers, there is Keith Moon and then there is everybody else.

A clock can keep time.
Moony played DRUMS.

Bonham.

Maybe not as technically hyper as some, but unmached in power with soul.

I find the prevelance of Buddy Rich references interesting to say the least, but not surprising. Yes, at one time Mr. Rich was to some "The drummers drummer", but it wasnt for his inovative style, but for his ability to play the same pieces note for note, beat for beat. He really wasn't ahead of his time, just one of the best technician of his time. And had the most exposure. He was what I would call "technically perfect but aesthetically boring". Yes, he was powerful and fast, when he was young. But when he got older he lived on his rep. I wouldnt say he was the best drummer ever, just the one everyone knows about.

Buddy Rich hands down. And everyone ultimately lives on their reputation when they get older. So my wife tells me anyway:-)
