Hey there. I'm considering pursuing a job in San Diego...just wondering if you can give me the reader's digest on cost of living, housing, etc...so I'll know how screwed I am when they name the salary.

Thanks,
Egg

SoCal is one of the most expensive real estate markets in the country. In 99 I sold a nice 3 bdrm tract on 1/4 acre in Escondido for almost $200K. They should pay you A LOT!

Eggman,

Make sure they pay plenty, I bought my home 9 years ago for much, much less that it is worth now in Orange County (North of S.D.). I have a couple of friends that are appraisers and they did one for me 6 months ago. My 4bdrm, 2bath is going for 450. You can assume that no matter what you look at, it will run in that range unless you want to live in the projects. I have several contacts if you would like more info.

Yowza. My problem is that the job is a step down in responsibility from what I'm doing now, (thus I doubt they'd pay enough to make it worth it) but my hope is that once installed there, I'd outshine the people who are in my preferred position and I'll take their place.

Ooh, crafty.

Thanks for the tips, guys. Appreciate it..I'll keep checking back.

There are others on the web. Just do a Google search for "cost of living" or "cost of living index." They take taxes, housing cost, energy cost, etc... into account. You'll be surprised.

South Alabama is a great place to live.

Hey there, Eggie-poo!

Come on out! The water's fine!

Ok, so they tell me it's expensive water, but what do I know!? I'm a native!

We bought our current home in '97 for $230K...today it's about $700-750K...who needs the stock market anyway!?

We have 5 homes in the past 7 years. Buy one, refi in 12 to 18 months, use that equity to get you into the next and so on...we've never looked for property during a "buyer's market" only. When we are able to pull some money out, we go for it. So far, so good.

Uh, I don't know what to tell you other than my experience here. I've travelled all across our country several times by car. I've seen all but 7 states and I love every part of this BEAUTIFUL country with the exception of our deserts. Vegas is an exception to the rule...but I absolutely LOVE Southern California!

The downsides as I see it:

-Traffic congestion - CONSTANTLY!
-We tend to get gouge on fuel prices compared to the
rest of the country.
-Taxes...

Everything else seems to be the same just about everywhere else we've gone. You have rude people and you have exceptionally nice people...anywhere.

I have a family friend who is a Realtor. Her name is Connie and we've bought 3 homes through her and I can highly recommend speaking to her.

I live northeast of San Diego... about 45 minutes from downtown. My area is still growing and you can find a very nice house for anywhere from $250,000 and up. It is less expensive than San Diego, and they are still building and it is still growing. My house cost me $165,900 4 years ago. I wouldn't accept a penny less than $330,000 now.

I agree E-chick, who needs the stock market? Socal real estate will make you rich quick, if you can swing it.
