I saw a poll being conducted on CNN today that asked the question "How much does your religion influence your vote?"
I noted that 65% had responded "not at all" while the remaining 35% was pretty equally split between "very much" and "somewhat".
I guess I understood why there was some early concern about Kennedy and Catholicism, but thought he'd pretty much dispelled the issue once and for all in the meeting he had with the Protestant clergy down in Houston ... and, to be sure, I'm annoyed with guys like Pat Robertson and Jesse Jackson who'd have you believe that God is somehow behind all of their zany BS, but have never once considered whether my religious convictions or the lack of them should impact my vote ...

Bottom line is, I'm not too surprised that I'm in a majority opinion on this one, I'm just surprised by the numbers on the other side ... is there really ANYbody out there who'd vote FOR a particular candidate, not on his record/policies/platform, but on what church he was a member of ???

I think they do and to some extent...should.

The problem as I see it...is that the candidates involved are usually not clearly a particular religion IN THEIR PLATFORMS AND PRACTICES. They may claim a religion and have membership therein, but some religions (i.e. Christianity) can be so diverse, it is difficult to determine which candidates are MOST Christian, etc....IF that is one's major criterion for voting for a candidate...something I don't support.

But as I have conceded many times, I know squat about politics...and less and less about religion as I live longer.

To clarifiy....Bush and Kerry have appealed to their faith....Christian.

However, to what extent has Bush's actions involving Iraq "Christian"? Also, is Kerry's stance on abortion "Christian"?

I'm not making an argument for the "Christian-ness" of the war or abortion....just pointing out some issues that some look at when determining a candidates' religious convictions.

Does my religion and beliefs/moral values etc influence my vote? Aboslutely.....it had better. Do I vote for the guys that is trying to match my religion? no, not necessarilly. I let MY religion and faith in God guide me and my decisions, not whoever is running's religion or faith. This election I actually spent quite a while in prayer before finally casting my vote for president....it was weird. Never spent that much time and or effort before! But I believe I voted for who God wanted me to. Who did I vote for? Nah...not going there....but rest assured, whoever it is won't win! Never do! LOL

Ooooh, what was it....oh yeah Frank and Ernest cartoon in the paper this morning....."I always try to vote for the loser, that way I don't feel any responiblity for what happens" LOL

Maybe it's just me, but the idea of an adult, much less a leader responsible for life and death decisions basing their actions on conversations with imaginary beings...well, maybe that's just me.

I know that religion, or lack thereof, certainly affects my political sentiments. I support a woman's right of control over her body, Dr. assisted mercy suicide, stem cell research, etc.

It's not that I resent religion. In many ways it embodies the very hallmark of what makes our kind and our civilizations so. It's hard to frown on the caranage and drama opposing groups sometimes direct at one another in consideration of the theater and hilarity provided by their Shakespearean schemes. On the other hand, who doesn't love serenity and peace; I don't plan on renting my next home in the Gaza strip.

I'm not a misanthrope. I don't resent other people and their idiosyncracies. But the religios life isn't for me. I covet cigars and wenches too much to be distracted by piety.

Steve, I would have to say that if you are a devout Catholic you would not vote for a democratic candidate period.

There is a Bishop in St Louis that refuses to allow democratic candidates or any others that support abortion to partake in the sacrament of the Eucharist.

I've never been a single-issue voter, but we need a cowboy in office right now. If it wasn't for the state of terrorism in the world, Bush's position on abortion, stem-cell research, and gay marriage would be enough for me to consider voting for Terry Kerry.

When JFK ran, the question was whether a Protestant nation could elect a Catholic President. The question with Kerry is will the Catholics vote for a pro-choice, pro-unlimited stemcell research candidate.

How innocent the 50's were when the press wondered if America could vote for Adlai Stevenson because he'd had a divorce. They didn't.

I wouldn't vote for an Islamic Extremist.

Does that count?

LOSING MY RELIGION
REM

Life is bigger
It's bigger than you
And you are not me
The lengths that I will go to
The distance in your eyes
Oh no I've said too much
I set it up

That's me in the corner
That's me in the spotlight
Losing my religion
Trying to keep up with you
And I don't know if I can do it
Oh no I've said too much
I haven't said enough
I thought that I heard you laughing
I thought that I heard you sing
I think I thought I saw you try

Every whisper
Of every waking hour I'm
Choosing my confessions
Trying to keep an eye on you
Like a hurt lost and blinded fool
Oh no I've said too much
I set it up

Consider this
The hint of the century
Consider this
The slip that brought me
To my knees failed
What if all these fantasies
Come flailing around
Now I've said too much
I thought that I heard you laughing
I thought that I heard you sing
I think I thought I saw you try

But that was just a dream
That was just a dream

the left of center is surprisingly well represented in this thread. See my comments on the thread, "What Universe do you live in..."

I practice a minority religion. I don't vote on a candidate by what religion they are but by how their holding office could affect my right to chose a religion other than Christian.

Yo Rick;

Your statement:

"since i have no religious interests, i have no way of answering this."

My retort:

No religious interests, bull**** !

You post about religion and you debate religion with others on this board. Pardon the pun but for Christ sake try reading your own posts before you post them.

you took the name of someone's lord in vain.

let me rephrase. i do not need religion in my life, but since it is fascinating to read about religion because so many people have so much to say about it and i like to know what they think they know.

it is always interesting to understand the workings of the minds of people who believe that they are going someplace that they will be conscious of after they die.

but, who knows what dreams may come when we have shuffled off this mortal coil.

i suspect there will be none.

Did anyone of you see an aborted fetus. Well I did and that changed my stand on the moral issue of pro-choice. I was always of the mind that all people had a free choice to do what they believed was right. I work in a sewage treatment plant and one day I noticed a little doll on the screening rack as I got closer I realized that it wasn't a doll but that it was a baby boy. Yes I could tell the sex of the baby and it was only about 10 inches long. It had hands eyes feet etc.It wasn't an organisim as some would like you to think it was a person. Some mother aborted this baby and threw in into the sewer. When something like this happens we have to call the police in. One of the police was a woman and when she saw the baby she started to cry. Her partner a male did the same. Free choice you say this baby did not have the free choice to be born His mother took that choice away from him. What I am saying with all the adoption agencys and couples that can't have children in this country stop and think. If you are pregnant and don't want the child think of all the couples that would be very happy to give the baby a home. Does my religon affec the way I vote. IT SURE DOES. When I go into the voting booth I vote PRO-LIFE. I thank God that I had a change of heart and I hope that other pro-choice believers will have the same.

i abhor the idea of abortion, but i also abohr the idea of dictating to a woman what she should do.

it is more complicated then anyone thinks as you can attest to.

how do you reconcile that with this country sending young men to die and to kill in a war that at the least might hae been unnecessary.

how about capital punishment.

killing another human being includes all of those.
