True, Robert. But I'm one of those "conspiracy theorists" who believe that the more powerful a Government is, the more likely they will become a thought police & come after those who disagree with them. Having said that, yes, respect for one another is important regardless of whether one worships the one true God or the moon but I thought we lived in a free society where we could burn things such as the flag AND books.
IMHO, we devolve into a Hitlerian/Bolshevik/Muslim society when we arrest a preacher or anyone for PLANNING to burn books & the purported hate crimes due to the book's title.

I think that Western society fears Islam greatly and thus treats it deferentially. This man, like him or not, is not cowed by them.

I can't tell if Rfenst is in favor of the arrest or against it!

Sick, isn't it? I could be hauled off in the middle of the night some day.

...and I think Rfenst detests the personal intent of the man to burn the "holy" Kurans but will gladly let you die for the man's right to express it.

Bingo!

We do live in such a society and the cost of Freedom of speech is having to put up with a message we don't like in return for that freedom we cheerish. This guy had the right to demonstrate on 9/11- free of government interference subject to time and place restrictions (as long as certain other simple rules and laws were followed). Although I do not like him; his message(s); and what and where he wanted to do it yet again this time, I do fiercely believe in his rights/our rights. It is simply the particular dichotomy of content vs. message that bothers/tests me here.

But, there and here is a unique third component to all of this that we rarely see. Those weren't weren't just books. They were religious books. SACRED PRAYER BOOKS! This brings the First Amendment into play in an additional/different way other than just Free Speech. In this instance, Free Speech/freedom of speech v. Free Religion/Freedom of Religion are involved which makes the entire matter far more irritating, disgusting and complex for me.

One can legitimately infer that the stop was based on pretext and therefore illegal based solely on the one article I saw and posted. That is a clear Fourth Amendment/Search and Seizure issue. It is just that I am focused on another issue here. Having said that, I read another article yesterday that indicated Jones had been at a McDonalds while carrying his firearm openly. Apparently, (but not definitely) someone from the McDonalds called it in. If true, that is definitely probable cause (at least to stop him) within a reasonable time thereafter- and even to arrest him- even if the cops were just "itching" for a reason. However, that is all a discussion for another thread/day.
