Last week I tried to get everyone in step and have only one bidder per day so they could get really cheap smokes... needless to say I couldn't get any cooperation with this excellent plan so I have a new idea!

Why don't you provide cigars "on approval"? I think that it would be a great boost in moving inventory. It could work very simple...

1)Offer all cigars... especially boxes... on approval to any bidder who posts a $1.00 bid

2)Ship them at a nominal charge... say $1.00 for overnight delivery...that way they will arrive fresh and in the best condition for the bidder to properly evaluate the smoke

3)Allow the bidder to smoke as many as they need to evaluate the quality of the cigar... this may take the entire box at times

4)Once the bidder has smoked enough of the box to evaluate the quality of the cigar they would be on a honor system to submit their bid payment in the currency of their choice... or possibly even trade cigars one for one with some less desirable sticks they may have lurking in their humidor... who knows someone else may love them

5)If they don't like the smokes then cbid can issue a UPS pickup (at their expense of course since the smokes obviously were no good and you wouldn't want to stick a customer with bad smokes!)....this obviously would not be needed if either #4 has occured and the bidder pays or within step #3 the bidder was required to smoke the entire box to properly evaluate the cigars.

I realize that on the surface this plan would appear to have many drawbacks from cbid's perspective but just remember the volume selling principle:

Lose a little bit on every sale but the volume will make up for it!

LOL @ Keith and Jim ...

It's funny how folks keep posting here for Gonz. He's just the webmaster (computer geek), and I doubt he has time keep up with all the posts ... and I'm sure he isn't the one who makes those decisions.

Honestly (and I know this thread is a joke), but that is the most ludicrous thing I've heard yet. CB already loses enough money on many of the bids as it is ...

Slim, I know you're gonna give me the full treatment for this, but if cigarbid's losing money, how can they stay in business? I can't believe philanthropy and altruism are the primary motives for offering a cigar auction site. I think one can safely assume that when all bids are averaged, CB/CI is making a healthy profit. Okay, I'm ready to receive my punishment.

Not so ... and I was told this by them. Of course they are making money, just not the 'hefty profit' you claim.

It's called volume sales ... and that's where they make their profit.

Figure it out for yourself. A lot of the stuff I get here is close to, if not lower, than wholesale many times ...

You crack me up ... no 'spanking' ...

It just makes me wonder though, when I win a box of cigars for $33 at CB that retails at CI for &79, which already has the lowest price I could find on the internet .... how folks could think they have a huge profit margin.

I know that CI will buy huge lots of sometimes discontinued cigars that nobdy else wants, and probably gets them substantially below wholesale, but still ...

Im sure that CBid makes a "healthy profit" from the (dead horse subjecting approaching) the overbidding, although I don't know if I would call it healthy..Maybe a good profit

Can we agree on "acceptable" profit, or must I bare my buttocks again? Slim, I'm getting to enjoy this!

Sure you may get one or two boxes at wholesale. But the wholesale price for 1000 boxes is a lot lower. Just look in any wholesale catalog. The price for one item vs 1000 is quite different. Volume buying makes a good profit.

I went through all the lots ending on 8-12-02 and as of 9:30 pm this is what I came up with. Quickies, 27lots, 48 items total bids $407. 5 Packs, 38 lots 150 items for sale $2254. Boxes 28 lots 95 items for sale
$2489. Total for that day and time $5150. Ok lets say they close out at $5000. a day @ 7 days $35,000. week
not bad. Or $1,820,000.a year and this is only their internet sales. they have to be making a good profit.

... it's only profit when you clear off the shelves, all that stock sittng there isn't helping their profit margin. They still have to pay the bills ...

No matter what they sell in a day, week or year, their inventory has got to be huge!

I hear they are erecting a monument to AM of Providence RI in front of the CI headquarters!

That guy is essential in maintaining CBID profitability through his overbidding on full lots of everything he can load onto his browser screen! LOL!!!

It's all smoke and mirrors (and slight of keystroke). Ya see, I tell the guys upstairs that we're barely covering payroll. Then, I siphon all of the ludicrous profits into the gonz family account. oops, was that out loud?
