A good one will try to winnow out what the person they are buying for smokes or likes. If the purchaser doesn't know the recommendation would be find out, gift certificates, or just get 1 or two from a solid cigar maker and not throw a few Macanudos or Rocky Patels in a bag to make a sale.
For gifts in general, sometimes ya have to accept and be gracious as the spirit of the gift is what counts, not what the gift is. Sometimes pulling up our big boy pants and saying thank you is what we should do, slipper socks, ugly azz sweater, pink bunny suit, or gag a maggot dog rocket cigars.
I would agree with the first statement. However, you don't blame the store because the consumer doesn't know what they are buying. Just like buying a TV. You hope the store directs you towards the correct purchase. But in the end it is up to the consumer to educate themselves about their purchase.
The shop owner may very well have tried to determine what Gummy likes. The shop owner is not a mind-reader however, and we have no idea what information was relayed to him or discussed. And obviously Gummy's not a regular or the owner may have remembered previous purchases.
But in the end we've all learned something. Before sending Gummy a RAOK check to be sure he like the cigars first. Buy from a shop that accepts returns, and include the receipt so he can return/exchange them so we don't have to hear him complain about a receiving bad cigar gift.
At least Gummy didn't receive pre-cut Victor Sinclairs…
