I was March '88 - September '91. Left PI May 10, 1991 to change home ports back to SD.

Left before Pinitubo, bud did go back and visit a couple times...maybe 94 & 96?
LIved on Jones, Espiritu and Gallagher.

Old Pro in Apra Harbor prior.

87-89, I was in Groton. Newport for five years after that.

I was supposed to go back and escort the wife and kid home, after we returned to SD... Pinatubo popper her cork on June 12, and my June 15 flight got axed. The wife and son were evacuated on the USS Arkansas to Cebu, then flew to Guam, Hawaii, SF... and finally SD.

I haven't been back since '91. Wife goes back to visit family every few years.

makes for good story now....I'd bet she was pretty pissed at the time...

Driving around Angeles and San Fernando was unreal in those years shortly after the eruption. Roads paved on lahar 30-40 feet deep...church steeples peeking up through along the roadside....like something from a sci-fi movie
