Two men are in jail on arson charges for allegedly setting fire to the interior of a Medford parking garage elevator after one of the men appeared to at least mimic a sex act with a mannequin head and set it ablaze.
City police and fire crews responded to a fire alarm at the Evergreen parking structure, 34 W. Eighth St., at 2:52 a.m. Wednesday, according to a news release. The elevator had been set on fire but the fire had apparently gone out on its own after scorching the elevator’s interior walls and floor. The damage was estimated at about $1,000.
Police reviewed parking garage surveillance video and said two men had entered the garage just before the fire, both carrying skateboards, with one carrying the mannequin head. Footage showed one of the men tipping over a garbage can while the other went into the elevator and made thrusting motions with his hips against the head, according to Medford police.
The men then allegedly lit the head on fire, left it on the elevator floor, and threw more debris onto the flames before leaving, the release said.
Police identified the men as 24-year-old Anthony Nicholas Montes and 18-year-old Mikal Joseph Walton.
Montes was arrested at the intersection of Tenth Street and Oakdale Avenue later that day.
Walton, who allegedly took the head in the elevator, was arrested at the Sunset Inn on Riverside Avenue, where he was living, police said.
Both are set to be arraigned on first-degree arson charges today, according to court records. Neither has any past criminal history in the state, records show.
