What happened happened after the election.. as President elect Trump had the right to instruct his soon to be security advisor to make inquiries.. why he lied is the question.. maybe he thought he did somethin wrong but the legal experts opinions I've heard differ...
I think it's a wider examination of the deep connections to Russians linked to Putin himself, and related stuff like the millions of dollars that flowed from Russia and Russian supporting Ukrainian "businesses" and government personnel, to Manafort and Flynn and others, all of which could/did? compromise US interests and policy.
Fixing the election? Probably too strong of a theory. Creating opinions in America to influence the election through a myriad of methods like social networks and fake news by Russian agencies definitely happened. We need to know if Trump's campaign played a role.
I know you'd be less uneasy if it were limited to election fixing, but think about Whitewater which did lead to impeachment proceedings. That started as an investigation of insider stuff in a real estate development deal! Many forget that. It ended with a BJ. And the principals actually lost 200K if I recall correctly. And the lead panel all ended up being shamefully guilty of similar infidelity, but never was national policy involved.
Nixon's unnecessary break-in at the Watergate was far more threatening to America's sacred election process, and is more closely related to this investigation, yet still different.
A whole bunch of stuff seems to overlap here, much will end up as dead ends, some will be bad but unrelated, still more is just coincidental, but damaging...like possible promises of easing Obama's proper sanctions of Russia in exchange for a promise from Putin to stand down until Trump took over..."coincidentally" followed by glowing statements from Trump about how he knew Putin was smart. It felt like Trump the marketing and branding master was at work rather than the leader of the free world...at least to me.
