Can't believe that there is so much BS in this thread. Some you know what your talking about but a lot of you should really stick to cigars. All this talk about solid lifters and what makes a stroker motor, man oh man. And, what ever happened to building your own motor? Crate motors don't do a thing for me. I guess I'm ole school where you when you built a hot rod.

My favorite motors (I know they were real tough to keep right) 327 375hp fuel injected vette motor or the 396 375hp motor that first appeared in the 65 vettes & 65 malibu/chevelle SS, & the 427 435hp motor in 1966.

Streetrod, not everyone was taught about engines growing up. Not everyone is mechanically inclined, and not everyone has seen an engine opened up and understands how all the parts work together.

I am mechanically inclined. I went to a few schools that helped.

That said, I still don't know much about internal combustion engines, other than how to do simple maintenance.

Well the crate motor is mostly a cost thing find a 427-435 that can be bought at a reasonable price most guys that have them think they got a solid piece of gold in the garage

and the 427-435 was in 65 vetts also I believe 427-425 was the 4 barrel and the 435 was tripower

a good friend had the 425 hp in a 66 vett

Sorry to disagree with you, but no 427 was available in the 65 vette. The vette introduced the 396 big block motor in April of 65. 1966 started the 427. Yes a complete 427 will cost a bundle. I'm talking about buying a block crank, heads, ect, ect and putting one together yourself. If you avoid the tripower you can do it for around 6 grand and have a killer motor with 500 + hp. See my correction in my original post. Forgot to add that the 427 started in 1966

Crate versus building from ground up is a simple economics decision.

Besides economics, I have more confidence in a motor that I build then a store bought one.
I have seen crate motors with bad rods, valves slapping and other issues after 2,000 miles. Heck I redid a crate motor for a guy after his oil pick up fell off after about 5,000 miles. Yeah you have a warranty, but who the heck wants to go through the trouble of pulling & installing another motor.

My buddy taught me a long time ago that; the engine builder knows whats in every motor he builds, BUT noone knows what is in the engine builders motor.

I will agree with that .

But you can buy a 6K crate engine or a 9K engine the one I posted is a Edelbrock Signature and I believe it would be a very well built engine.

Anyone can put junk together and call it rebuilt but if you buy from a reputable company you will get good stuff

Chevy small block history: '55-'06
http://www.chevyhiperformance.com/tech/engines_drivetrain/shortblock/0605ch_small_block_chevy_history/viewall.html

Largest, most powerful Chevy small block (at publication time):
http://www.corvettemuseum.org/specs/2006/LS7.shtml

Another good read on the history of the SBC:
http://www.motortrend.com/features/consumer/1111_small_block_chevy_v8_through_the_years/viewall.html

I'll also add that my neighbor's '04 GTO with the LS1 is currently producing 712hp at the wheels, naturally aspirated. Yes, he's done some engine work.

And he's not done. Next up is forced induction. The engine is already a race motor, now he wants to push it over 1200hp.

Tell me about it. I remember when that car landed in the states and thinking to myself, "I've seen this car before." Then it hit me what it actually was. GM's lame attempt at bringing a dinosaur to the states for a quick sale.

That engine will only cost a mere 17K LOL but it would be strong for sure and that is the first 7 Liter engine I have seen called a small block LOL

Buncha funny old geezers.

What they never mentioned is the 396 could be had with 425 HP. StreetRod knows about that.

Had a '55 Chevy with a stock 283
Had a '41 Ford truck with 350 Chevy making 325 HP
Had a '69 Chevelle 396/350
Currently have a '65 Vette 327/350 and it is faster than any of those.

Not to mention a 74 Camero that looked cool but the 350 made about 170HP thanks to the government mandates. What a pig that was.

There are many great Chevy small blocks and big blocks. My favorite is in my 68 Chevy Impala, SS427 L70.
