For good or bad, Kraft considered Mayo to be the heir apparent for a while now... kinda behind the scenes. This also allowed the Patriots get around the NFL Rooney Rule (requirement to interview two minority candidates for a coaching vacancy).
I wonder if Kraft would have done this if he knew more experienced coaches like Vrabel, maybe Harbaugh, maybe Tomlin would/might be available. Mayo's only coaching experience is 5 years as the Patriot's linebacker coach. Prior to that I think he was doing sports talk radio or something after he retired from playing football.
I’mma really curious how a succession plan allows teams to bypass the Rooney Rule. I don’t care that it was the Patriots that did it, just wanna know how and why.
Google search here we come!
Edit: Well, whatdaya know, succession plans in the NFL have been done 3 times before!. And better yet, it’s within the Rooney Rule so no bypassing, cheating or sleight of hand. Nothing for NE haters to get angry about…other than the fact that Kraft was (mebbe) smart enough to recognize the next coach he wanted and how to get him onboard without all the rigmarole of the hiring process.
