Marla, glad to hear you enjoyed Sevendust. I've been listening to them for years. Denial is my favorite song by them. If you get the chance, download it, or I can send it to you.

Send me an email me if you want me to send it to you.

Does anyone remember The Screaming Blue Messiahs? Is that the best name ever for a rock band, or what?

What about this band JR? And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead, I think it's the longest name ever!

Motley Crue fought as well as they played music --- pretty badly (watched Nick Six and Tommy Lee get their butts kicked outside the Rainbow Room on Sunset Strip many moons ago -- was actually pretty funny theatre).

Right now, I'm listening to some awesome guitar geniuses, Robben Ford and Eric Johnson (play rock and blues).

For a kick *ss mood, I just pop in anything by Guns N Roses. (Feel pretty bad for Tracii Guns, getting kicked out of his own band before it hits the big time - Ouch).

I know this chick, she lives down on Melrose...

Seen Bill Bailey lately? What a joke...guess he ran outta dough. Just ain't the same...Slash is THE #1 guitarist in my book, he's unbelievable. From burning rock licks to Flamenco...whew! Saw him down here in Hillcrest while he had pneumonia awhile back...maybe trying some naturalpathic (sp) remedies...

who the hell are these one record bands? their cd's end up on the 80% discoutn rack in a few months. their style is loud, they can;t sing, and most of them can't play worth a ****.

they serve the purpose of satisfying the need for something new, loud, faster.

there were bands and singers that are still played and listened to.

if you younger ones had heard louis prima, bobby darin, the bee gees and their teachers the mills brothers, leadbelly, anita o'day, patsy klein, lester young, bix, bobby hacket, and all the singers and musicians that did not need electronics to make music, you would know what singing and playing on key means.

marla, shame on you, you're old enough to know better.

Rick, agree with what you said except for the Bee Gees. How the Hell did they get mentioned in the same sentence with Louis Prima?

I guess I'd get badly flamed if I started talking about Classical music.

Hey Rick. Have you ever listened to Mongo Santamaria? Hot as you are for Louis Prima, you'd probably like the sound. Check out his "Afro-American Latin". Great stuff.

I love violin concertos, Perlman is amazing!! Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, and Bach all get regular play... I think it's by far the most expressive and dynamic instrument. I also love piano concertos. I think I prefer individual instruments as opposed to orchestras for the simple fact that it’s much harder to play without accompaniment. Both of my sisters as well as my mother are piano players so I grew up with classical music.

the bee gees because of their harmony also the best of the bunch, the hi-los.

for latin i like lucero

i can burn cd's on my new 40x burner and will be delighted to burn and mail them to any and all that want. my personal favorite is stern playing tchaikovsky's violin concerto, my second personal favorite is beethoven's 5th with toscanini conducting.

i have klezmer (1), django reinhardt, bix, the two big bands, many of the classical sopranos (singers, not gangsters), many of the tenors, kd lang, janis ian, and a cast of hundreds including country, bessie smith, mahalia jackson, barbershop(1), lenny, and i even have manilow.

email your requests and snailer, and i will fill what i can. [email protected]

i am off to vegas wed, but when i return, i will enjoy the pleasure of sharing music.

some of the burned cd's will play in the car and sometimes not. i suspect the cd in the car because they all play on a home cd player

the cost of cd's to burn, with all the rebates, amounts to nothing so no offer of payment or cigars will be entertained.

Gotta love Louis Prima w/Sam Butera and the Witnesses! I also listen to classical, love the Piano pieces of Beethoven, Chopin, and also like Beethoven's Symphonies! Like Yo Yo Ma, Perlman, Horowitz, and big fan of Leonard Bernstein! Cigar smoking, reading a thriller and classical music makes for sheer pleasure!

Haven't been able to mix Texas Boogie with Classical, but being a fan of both is not too difficult! The only kind of music I do not like is the elevator crap and Lawerence Welk type stuff! I do not consider Rap and Hip Hop music, so count that junk as jungle noise!

My favorite is Ravel. Especially his piano music, especially the impossibly brilliant Gaspar de la nuit. But I like Lisa Stanfield, too, singing "Down in the Depths on the 90th Floor." Looking for Ellephants Gerald (did I spell that right, Rick?) 's "The Lorelei," an obscure Gershwin tune from the Live in Berlin album that I used to listen to in a Fort Worth dive a long time ago, on the jukebox. Kurt Weill. One magic night I caught Igor Stravinsky himself conducting The Firebird at the Hollywood Bowl. Grew up on Stan Kenton. On and on and on. Us old musicians (putative and otherwise) ought to have a herf one of the days.

Music is truly the great equalizer. Reviewing many of the posts it's amazing to see the posts, and the varied eclectic tastes/interests. WONDERFUL.

About the only thing I really hate is most hip-hop/rap (although there are a few I enjoy --- even though I'm into my 5th decade now).

Favorites:

Rock: GNR; ZZ TOP; AC/DC; Dire Straights

Swing Jazz: Benny Goodman (Sing, Sing, Sing by Rick's favaorite, Louis Prima)

Jazz: Fourplay (an amazing colaboration of 4 outstanding musicians -- my favorite being Nathan East on bass and Lee Ritenour on guitar)

New Age: Loreena McKennitt (hauntingly relaxing and thematic)

Classical: Beethoven's 9th (Choral)Symphony ---- I don't believe any other music can/will top this; Copland --Fanfare for the Common Man; Nadja Salerno (violin) playing Brahms Sonata NO. 2; Andres Segovia (guitar) playing Torroba - Romanza de los Pinos.

Country: Vince Gill - One More Last Chance (his guitar work is very impressive); anything by Faith Hill, Patty Loveless, or Shania Twain (I may be overly influenced by the eye candy factor).

I'll probably get nailed for this but... I love some rap, I admit it's not nearly as intricate or engaging as a lot of other music, but some of the beats are so rhythmically engaging. Especially Busta Rhymes, Ludicris, and Timbaland...

I guess you can say I have eclectic tastes...

Nothing like drudging up an old thread...

True metalhead here... not the watered down crap you hear on the radio, either. Napalm Death, Morbid Angel, Slayer (whoo!!!), Pantera... basically anything with lots of of double bass, extreme tempos, and Cookie Monster vocals.

But then I'm also heavily into blues and bebop jazz... Miles (natch...), Coltrane, Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, Wayne Shorter, Dos Alberts (King and Collins), Stevie Ray, etc, etc... But as of late I've been on a real southern rock kick. Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, Allmans, can't get enough. Amazing how diverse your tastes get when you play an instrument (guitarist).

Anywhoo, just thought I'd add my 2 pesos if for no other reason than to be annoying...

Get up, you d*mn horse! (wham!) I said get up! (wham! thump! wham!)

Heck..lets see if we can get it to 100.

I grew up on rock. As a little kid listening to my sister's favorite Jefferson Airplane and Bob Dylan.

My taste developed in the mid late 70's. My favorite groups still are Styx, Pink Floyd, Kansas, Zepellin, Journey (Bay Area boy), Yes, Gary Wright, Van Halen, ACDC and Black Sabbath. I frequently play the heck out of one of these groups for months at a time.

I have rather broad tastes now. Depending on the mood...anything goes.

I resemble that remark...and I don't think I am that old.

Funny....I like them better now than I did then. I was always afraid to have my car windows open and have Andy Gibb blaring out "Stayin Alive Stayin Alive!" for my friends to overhear.

But even at my advanced age, I can tell the difference between Rob Zombie, Tool, and Korn.

A couple friends of mine and I went to the Tool show in KC a few days ago (got in free since we had connections with the promotion company). We only went to see Meshuggah open up for them (now THERE'S a band! Whoah!), and split afterwards, since none of us really cared about Tool that much (mope-rock never did much for me).
