What is your biggest Dogstick that you smoked (on purpose or by accident) last month?

Fortunately, I haven't had that problem in a great while. I know what I like, and I know what I don't like ...

... life's too short to smoke 'dog rockets'.

Two cigars that I really wanted to like and was greatly disappointed in the last month:

The Maya Reserve Torpedo--looks good, the description sounds interesting, but lighting it up it produces one the harsher smokes I've had in quite awhile, with a remarkable lack of pleasant flavors that might serve as a counterbalance. The harshness remains even when smoking it down, and it presents a curious lack of complex flavors in spite of its somewhat intriguing appearance and blend.

Counterfeit Cubans--had heard good things about these, and it's a Perdomo progeny, so how could it go wrong? Sadly this one misses in my opinion. I've smoked two and both had a terrible draw, and a blend that was insipid with a somewhat mildewy taste which I think is meant to emulate the loamy taste of many ISOMs, but doesn't come close. I found its core tastes rather bland. This one seemed all mimicry and pretense, but with no real substance.

gerber, try the Pre Embargo Genuine Counterfeit Cubans. Completely different and much, much better. YMMV

Thanks Melski. Perhaps this explains the variance between what I've heard and what I smoked. By the way, I just noticed that CI is running a special on Counterfeit Cubans. Sorry, CI--purely coincidental and just expressing an honest opinion.

By the way, I can offer a strong recommendation of another cuban imitation--the Cuban Knock-Off by Augusto Reyes. Unlike my other negative review, this one is a great cigar! Full-bodied, rich taste, and very inexpensive. I was actually surprised at how good it is. Despite the goofy name, I highly recommend it.

La Flor de La Isabela Tabacalera robusto. A cigar from my homeland, Philippine Islands. Very dry, burnt hot, lawn clippings seemed to come to mind. I would love to see the P.I come out with a great smoke but oh well!

My latest disappointment was with the maya resrve. It sounded good but when I lit it I quickly realized its true intention is to clean my dogs mines from the bottom of my shoe.Absolutely terrible cigar

None...

But as soon as I receive that bigass shipment of bids that I just won, I'm sure I'll add to this dogstick list!

BOY did I take a chance on some cigars...

Not sure it qualifies to be labelled as a dogstick - but the Maxim's de Paris were a major disapointment. The cigar is gorgeous - beautiful Conn. Shade Wrapper, great construction, etc. But we smoke these things for taste - correct. This cigar is basically without taste - roll up newspaper really pretty and light it - it's about the same. Extra Mild to an absurdity.

Funny, the closer I get to finishing-off the last brick of 50cent smokes I got here on CBid the better they taste! What's that saying...? You date alot of dogs before you marry one??? Or something like that, anyway, mining a 400 tons of rock to get 1 diamond comes to mind....it makes you appreciate it that much more!

But just for grins, Swisher Sweets come to mind. I smoked that dog when I was young and dumb....

hmm, I dont hate the Maxims. I like them when Im locked indoors without oxygen. Theyre light enough for me to inhale. lol

I absolutely hate victor sinclair (the older vintage line) and the yellow band cohibas!

Montague, Lempira and Victor Sinclair all get honorable mention on my list of puppy nuggets. But don't take my word for it, tastes differ. I think Maxim's de Paris are pretty good, not super-premium as advertised but pretty good.

Had an El Rico Habana Habana Club that tasted like it was rolled with cigarette tobacco. Smoked about 1 inch, then tossed it out the car window. Licked some engine oil off of the dipstick to clear the terrible taste out of my mouth. Moved the other three that I have to the "Maybe I'll Try These Again If I Run Out Of Good Cigars And I Am Getting Desperate" humidor.

W&D centros robusto. These things are like sucking on straws the tobacco is so loosely packed. I really like Don Thomas cigars and am surprised that these 2nds that "didn't quite make the cut" are produced by the same folks. I smoked a Maya Reserve yesterday too and found it lacking.

The last DR I smoked has been a while ago (Summer?) it was a Negra Montecruze? But, what I've learnt as I've said b4, since it's a hand made product, you can definitely experience differences from box to box or from stick to stick. I have had a great box of cigars with a DR "Wolf in sheeps clothing" lying right in there amidst the yummins...

I'll second that--Flor del Todo was a disappointment; not horrible, but not at all what I had hoped.

The original Maya line in maduro made by Pedro Martin, aged for a couple of years, were incredibly rich tasting cigars...but they always needed to be put to sleep for quite a while.

I bought a bundle of Maya Reserve from CBid when they were first offered, recalling my experience with the old line maduros, though these were a rosado. They are very young, clearly still giving off an ammonia aroma. I believe Pedro Martin now has these made by Nestor Plasencia. After removing the cello fom each cigar, and placing them loosely for storage in an unvarnished cedar box and into a cooler, a few months later they've become a very different cigar. In another six months to a year, they will be excellent. If you have some of the Mayas, and found them harsh, let them rest and try them in several months.

I am sorry to say it was a Henry Clay... Smoked one during a break from shoveling the three feet of snow out of my driveway last week, after a few minutes, the shoveling seemed more fun.

Leave'um be...

A Belmondo torp. Bought from another retailer. sounded interesting in the catalog. first one gagged me, put them in storage for a while, thinking maybe a good yard 'gar.

well, weather was nice yesterday, got out and did some early season planting. Fired one up and smoked about 1/3 before I had to plant it too! moving them to the moocher humi!

I tried an Trilogy Maduro last night. Great shape and look, but YUCK! Too bitter for me, had that burnt scrambbled egg taste. Lots of smoke and a easy draw but not what I was hoping for. Too bad. :(

A Cuban Knockoff. On the strong side with a harsh unappealing aftertaste.

As for you guys who don't like the Maya Reserves.

You need to try the regular Maya line. It is a whole

different creature than the Reserve line. MUCH BETTER!!
