HELP!
Need info on identifying the AF 858 sungrown. I happened to be in a liquor store here in SD and saw they had a cabinet humidor containing some purdy decent smokes. Happened to pick up an AF that was cedar and cello wrapped, black satin band, short n stubby. Didn't think much about it until I got home and remembered a post regarding the 858SGs. What else should I have been looking for? -k

Sorry, got a lil excited. First AF I've seen with the black band. It's still a decent smoke I take it?

Yes, it is a decent smoke; probably one of the best sungrowns around for the price. Up a notch would be the Cuban Belicoso (fuller bodied), then the 858 (complex, enough full body and incredible taste) with the 858 good enough to make you need to "go clean yourself up"...

The Montesino sungrown belis are also good.

I'm still a newbie so I haven't sampled enough sungrown cigars to know the differences. What are the distinguishing features, qualities, and tastes associated with the SG vs shade grown? For the moment, I'm really diggin Cameroon wrappers.

You'll just have to smoke one to to see the difference.

They have a wonderful flavor profile, because the leaves (being sun-grown) get the extra exposure to the sunlight.

The more sun the leaves get, the darker the color and the greater the oil and sugar content the wrapper will have ... and a sweeter and stronger the flavor is likely to be. Sun-grown wrappers normally will have spent longer time on the tobacco plant, or come from higher altitudes ... which means the extra exposure to sunlight produces both extra oil (as protection) and more sugar (through photosynthesis). They are also fermented longer ...

Sun-grown tobacco leaves develop a richer reddish hue and are more robust and more heavily-veined. This makes for a more powerful, robust flavor generally best suited for true aficionados (or your grizzly grandfather with one remaining taste bud).

Shade-grown tobacco is more delicate and much lighter in both color and flavor.

Slim's summary of the 858SG profile is right on. And jd1 is correct about the Montesino SG beli, it is a very good stick.

By coincidence I had a 858 SG last night. One that had about 2yrs age on it. It's everything I like in a cigar. Superb construction, even burn, complexity in the taste and just enough strength and pepper to keep me in the throes of ecstasy. BTW,iffin ya can't tell tell I happen to like these. X
