Sitting here smoking a well aged RyJ.

It's a toro size (don't know the official name).
Very well constructed. Perfect burn. Good body, smooth draw.
But very one-dimensional in flavor.
It's been a while since I've smoked one of these. Is this typical? If so, why the premium pricing?

I think they're like expensive mac-a-nude-o's. Although some of the ISOMs are quite nice. I have a box (half full :-( of ISOM Churchill’s. Schweet, very nice! Hogie? You get those yet? I would try that long Romeo first :-)

tail- i dont care much for RyJ, or upmann either for that matter. they just dont seem to be a 'cigarr smokers' cigar, if you know what i mean.

Had one of the limited edition 007 RyJ a few weeks ago. Apparently the ones they sell with the 007 James Bond RyJ humidor. I have to agree with tailgater. Almost everything was flawless with my cigar, but the taste was a little lacking.

Scored a couple of ISOM RyJ Chruchills for my birthday last month. Smooth and mild, and perfect in every other respect.

Would somebody please explain how a cigar can be "one-dimensional in flavor"? What does that mean??

I smoked a well aged RyJ Vintage #3 (Dominican) t'other day. Me likem just fine, tank you berry much. Dunno how many dimensions the flavor had but it was good enough for me.

Last week I won a bid on RyJ Reserve Maduro (7/50) fired one up and found it to be medium strength but more flavorful then any other RyJ that I have tried, also had a very pleasing aroma. I'll let the other four sit for a while. JonR

efm,
"one-dimensional in flavor" Means just that. There was one flavor instead of several combined flavors! ie:
coffee, cedar, earthy, leather, or whatever. The palates of people differ a lot. One person may only describe the flavor as a whole because their palate doesnt pick up on the other flavors. where another may be able to pick up on all of the flavors and name them.

Did that make sense? Just my 2 cents!!

To me, one dimensional means that the cigars holds the same taste over the entire length of the cigar. A good cigar changes flavor, more than just getting stronger, because it was blended to do that.

As far as the RyJs, y'all hit the nail on the head. Very mild and very boring, but extremely well made. Try the RyJ Vintage. It's a much better cigar and quite a bit more complex, but not too strong or too harsh.

Smoker,

I agree with you on the RyJ Vintage. It is a bit more complex and very smooth. Burns great too. Got a box of #3's. Use them for a "quicker" smoke (4-1/2 x 50)

The Havana version in corona is simply remarkable. Among my favorites next to the VR Famoso/Unicos.

efm,
I'm not so gifted as to be able to pick out and name certain flavor characteristics. By "one dimensional" I meant the flavor lacked depth.
Some cigars burst with flavor, others have very discernable tastes (such as cedar, spice, etc). This one was flat.
Very unusual for such a finely crafted cigar.

I was lucky enough to have a couple RyJ Havana Churchills Tubos given to me by a friend and I thought they were great. I also split a box of RyJ No2 Tubos, but they were delux or especial or something. They were a little more harsh than I was used to, but I thoroughly enjoyed them after the first one.
