Starz - Attention Shoppers!

Yes!

Didn't I just mention goosebumps? Benny Goodman and Gershwin got nothing on Johnny All Alone when it comes to goosebumps...raises the hair on the back of my neck just thinking about it...one of the best song opening set of chords I've ever experienced live.....right up there with Supertramp School harmonica....or Rush Bastille Day guitar

Saw on Wiki that Violation was supposedly the favorite album of Starz fans....so I listened to the whole thing for first time in years...I'd never really liked it much and always thought Attention Shoppers was far better...but, I gave Violation an honest listen today....and it sorta sucks....at least next to Attention Shoppers. I'm sure some of it is my own personal nostalgic bias, but, I don't think there's any comparison...and the wiki characterization about Violation being metal-er or harder or whatever it said...and A.S. being more mainstream or pop-rock-ish is pure rubbish. 3rd Time's a Charm is a bit weak, but the rest of A.S. is very solid 70's rock and roll.

Yeah, Violation was them trying to crack AOR...70's style...before Cheap Trick. They were competing with Frampton, Boston, KISS, Steely Dan, Aerosmith, ZZ Top and the Doobie Brothers...kinda stuff you'd think they'd be able to grab attention with. As it stands...they really never garnered the fame they deserved. They put out solid records, toured extensively on them and gave fans a great show. I saw them twice and like them even more after seeing them live.

Their self titled album kicks ass too.

Over and Over, Night Crawler, Fallen Angel and Pull The Plug...all rockin tunes!

Sadly, only saw Stevie once too. I was at this show and if this wasn't the loudest damn concert I ever went to, then it would be a close second. Beck, Bogert and Appice would be the other show that left my ears ringing for days.

in the early 70's, friends thought I was kidding when I said I thought they were really good.

Most had them written off as a top40 band due to the explosion of new music outlets on FM radio. At that time there was peer pressure to side with AM vs FM.

Doc, it's been decades. Any particular album(s) I should revisit?

Saw SRV and Jeff Beck in late 1989. It was the 7th and last time I saw Stevie. He was back in June 1990, but I didn't want to do an outdoor venue in Houston in June. Fingered he'd be back soon....

The Fire Meets the Fury Tour. Which show did you catch? They took turns opening / headlining and usually jammed together at the end.

Wish they came to Hawaii. Sad

I like them all to be honest...been years since I'd heard them and with my jukebox a tune came on and that got we wanting to listen to a whole album...Can never go wrong with "311" though...solid all the way through. Great going to the beach or hanging by the pool music.

Rick,
Like you, I was blown away by their 1st CD.
Give the others some serious listening time and they will grow on you. TRUST ME !

PS

Stax....and more Stax...it isn't often that I wish I was just a few years older....this music (and its history) had largely escaped me...I mean I always loved 60's soul/R&B/funk...but from a suburban white-guy perspective...it was all about Motown...what an era...I know most of the big Stax names, but didn't really know...ya know?
