I never found free-form jazz to be very accessible to me....Pat Methany was one of those that got me hooked on the next generation of jazz...with real melodies..right around 1980...he and Sanborn, Clarke, Syro Gyra, Lorber, Tom Scott....they tread a fine line between saccharine soft rock and jazz. The older guys I worked with exposed me to CTI / Kudu and greatly expanded my horizons so by the time ECM started releasing artists like Metheny, I was ready for him. Pat Metheny...got all his stuff...I'll have to dust it off. Been awhile. Dkeage - DMV - I've vacillated on this for over 20 years. At one point I was going to spend about $1500 for a table and MC cartridge but changed my mind at the last minute. Then I was gonna go the other way and just get a $100 cheapie but changed my mind again. Now that my stereo system is in storage, the urge to get a turntable has been totally quenched. But who knows, I'm a Gemini and can change my mind at any moment. |

Eric Clapton - The Best and Worst Live: The Abuse Years 1974 to 1979
A comp of some of Eric's finest as well as terrible performances during his drunken period. On some songs he's as drunk as a skunk (...slurring, swearing at the audience, sloppy guitar playing...thank goodness for George Terry...), on others, less drunk but pushed by guests such as Carlos Santana and Pete Townshend, he delivers great solos. Was fun to make and listen to once in a blue moon.

https://vimeo.com/169944306 even if the song is not at all about trains in any way, I am a sucker for songs that have that clickety clack forward drive of trains incorporated into them...liked very much, unusual for me on one listen. Even though they were "popular", I always felt their popularity was wrongly limited due to the perception of being an artsy band. thanks |

Besides Carlos and JM, the rest of the band: Khalid Rasin (fka Larry Young) Doug Rauch Armando Peraza Billy Cobham So in a way, there were 6 virtuosos in that group. As far as the Hawaii show goes, I've been reminded by my friends who were also there that they played for 3 hours that night (...last tour stop and all...). Sure wish I could find a recording! |
