Whistlepig 10yr rye.

It's different. There is a vegetal note to it I am not sure I love. May require more sampling before I can make a good determination.

I also had to use a few more ice cubes than normal since I forgot it in my trunk all afternoon and it's in the 90's. When I tore the plastic seal the cork popped like a champagne bottle.

John J Bowman single barrel Viginia bourbon. Yes it IS actually bourbon 'from' Virginia. The A. Smith Bowman distillary is owned by Sazarac (who also owns Buffalo Trace - among others). Bowman takes Buffalo Trace's #1 mashbill (which is double distilled) and then they distill it a third time. They then age it in a singel barren in Viginia - thereby giving you a Virginia bourbon. Go figure. I picked up a couple of bottles while driving through Virginia. Don't know if its available in most parts of the counrty (I know I cant find it anywhere in NJ). But it IS quite tasty! Beer

It's crazy how different a neck pour can be from the rest of the bottle.

I was really disappointed in the first pour of whistlepig yesterday, the last flavor in my mouth was like wet grass juice. It was pretty offputting.

Today, now that the bottle is below the neck, 99% of that flavor is gone and this bottle just got dangerous. 100 proof and easy sipping...

Iirc, we had a short discussion about neck pours late last year. I haven't cracked open a new bottle of anything in awhile but wondering if, the next time I do open a new bottle, to pour a couple of ounces into a glass and let it sit on the side. Then, pour out what I'm gonna drink and then pour the neck pour back in?

Will that make any difference? Think

Balcones Texas Single Malt (not the lineage)
Joseph Magnus Triple Cask

Been wanting to try the Balcones, I’m a big fan of their stuff and it didn’t let me down. It’s a bourbon lovers single malt. The JM is just amazing, hard for me to say but I’ll be damned if it wasn’t worth the $.

I think the real effect the neck has is that the booze only has a tiny amount of air to interact with for along time and it just 'steeps'. I have a feeling if I were to open a new bottle of WP10yr and pour out the first glass and let it sit overnight exposed to the air, the whiskey in that glass would lose that grassy taste.

If you wanted to prep a new bottle, it might make more sense to pour out a glass or two's worth a few days before you plan to drink it, then either drink what you poured out (that has had fresh air for a few days) or pour from the bottle that has had fresh air for a few days. Wait, that might be exactly what you were decribing. I need more coffee.

Also, Redemption Rye last night.

It's not going to make you smack your momma and praise Jesus, but it's a good tasting, easy to drink rye. A bit one-note, but honestly for the price, get a bottle and enjoy it. I tried Sazerac rye and thought it was "ok" but it had a weird flavor I can't define. The only other ryes I have tried are whistlepig and angels envy, which is a finished rye. I probably won't buy more wp, but the angels envy is really good, albeit almost twice the price of the Redemption.

I haven't tried the rr yet, but went looking for it based on MACS's recommendation. It was no where to be found at total wine (the single barrel). They should rename it "total wine but incomplete bourbon"...

Angel's Envy- yes. Sampled that a month or two ago. Way out of by booze budget. Whistle Pig 6 year Piggy Back I like. That too was (in my budget mind) is more expensive than it has to be. Was considering Sazerac, but not any longer.

Hell it's even much better than a lot of expensive stuff I've tried.

I mean, try it. Your palette may be very different from mine. I bought a glass at abar I was at, so I basically paid for the whole bottle and only got one glass.

I would definitely pick up the Redemption, though. It's ~$26 here, so it's an easy sell.

I am finding less expensive regualr bourbons a little too sweet for me lately (talking to you Buffalo Trace), but the rye's are really hitting the spot for me.

I am glad I finished of that bottle of whistlepig, it was pretty bad. Tasted like I was drinking grass puree. Looks like a few other people left reviews to the same effect on TW website. I wonder if it's like a cilantro thing where some people get a weird taste and others don't.
