Huck - I triple dog dare you to sneak into Mexico and see what happens. You'll be fined, extorted, and possibly imprisoned and beaten. If you're idiot enough to bring your kids, separation will be the least of your worries.

I fish some of their Islands off Rosarito every weekend... know what I have to do? Fill out a manifest with my name, the name of my boat, the names of all passengers, dates of birth, passport numbers, etc... then I have to pay a "temporary visa fee" of damn near $30 per person. Then e-mail it to the jagoff Mexican gov't... every... time.

Know what happens if I get stopped by the Mexican Navy and don't have the proper documentation?

Me neither... because I follow their f***ing laws.

Red tape and payola. Gotcha. Hope its worth it.
I'll bet though that Mexican fishing vessels have to get similar clearance from us.

And aren't Illegal activities a whole other beast? Like undocumented immigration?
Pretty sure if what you have to go through, annoying as it is, was all an immigrant had to go through to get processed, he'd be very happy. You're apple and orangeing I think.

Smugglers are dealt with harshly by all governments. And should be. Fluck em I have to work for a living.

But when tens of thousands try crossing (and about 1000 drown every 6 months) the Mediterranean to get to Italy,  or 300 die every year (10,000 dead since 94)  trying to cross from Mexico (illegally) in to the US, I have to ask 'wtf would make people, families, risk all, life and limb, that way?'.

Desperation, right? Not bass and mackerel.

Immigration and Refugeeism, legal and otherwise is epidemic. It's a flucked up global reality. Better than from a couple of years ago from what I've read but still nuts.
It's overwhelming  Europe and Africa and us. Over 20 million refugees are being hosted in just the Middle East, Africa and South Asia. Was a big reason for trumps getting elected, Brexit, the recent bizarre Italian election results... a whole long list of things....

I get your point. Mexico isn't the US. But who is?

I don't have the solution, but stupid fox-like soundbites like 'lefties want open borders' aren't helping anyone. Left does it too but to me its just childish bs. Net effect, more division.

A big part of why it's such a hot topic now is Trump has changed the game. It's much harder to apply now. So more illegal attempts...

Personally, I suspect/hope that in time, what's practical and humane and financially reasonable will combine to settle the crisis.

I mean isnt it at all possible that some of these undocumenteds are moms and dads that love their kids? And want them to be safe and have good lives? Like good parents do?

First, it's something Trump flat out fabricated. Podesta, who Trump named specifically, never possessed the server. But he was a victim of the same phishing trick as the DNC, led by group of hackers that the Homeland Security Department and Office of the Director of National Intelligence linked to the Russian government.

Besides, if Trump back-channelled during the champaign with foreign sources hoping to get an advantage, my God, isn't that a much bigger deal than what Trump accuses the dnc of?

So deflection? If the dnc/FBI thing were true, sure. Fact check that.
It was just Trump running his mouth and grasping at straws.

Seems to me that doing anything less than taking a stronger position would literally prove insanity. We can't keep doing the same thing over and over and yet expect a different result.
We've played the amnesty card already.
We've promised to "increase" border security too many times.
It doesn't work.

And worse: now that TDS reigns supreme, whenever an attempt is made to tighten border security by, oh I don't know, ENFORCING the laws, the administration is accused of tearing apart families.

I say No to blanket amnesty, and Yes to increasing border security.
I was against the concept of a wall from the get go. We could create a virtual wall by making it truly illegal (because there are now varying degrees of it) to hire an undocumented immigrant. Make it truly illegal to house them. To feed them. unless you're just tending to them while you wait for ICE to arrive because you already called them.

It's not inhumane to expect, nay to DEMAND that our laws be upheld.

You want open borders? Change the laws. Don't lash out towards those that enforce the current ones.

I would add to that...END ANCHOR BABIES! Enact legislation to end this stupidity. There isn't another industrialized nation that allows this. Sad to say that businesses large and small, from landscapers and restaurants to mega corporations have been complicit.

I'm willing to find out though.

I worked at a deli meat and sausage production company down in Burbank... the plant was in shambles... the meat they produced was dangerous...

drains didn't drain properly, hot water didn't work in some areas of the plant, workers would use the restroom without removing their work smocks and rarely washed their hands afterward...

I was able to make some major changes, but it was lipstick on a pig...

I even had a very respected individual in the meat science field - dr keith belk - come out to the plant and strongly encourage me to quit before someone died from the meat being produced...

None of that is exaggerated... the usda had a target on this place and openly discussed it from day 1... within a month of taking the job, the plant was handed a notice of intended enforcement, meaning the usda intended to shut the place down... we worked our way out of it, but the plant continued to have serious issues and still does I'm sure...

My point? The plant should've been shut down long ago and their business absorbed by a larger company producing at usda level specifications... but they continue to stay in business.... because they employ, almost exclusively, illegal immigrant labor...

You can work them overtime without pay, you can treat them like garbage, you can shave hours off their paycheck, and they Never complain....

I'm not a big fan of big business... as much as i hate the thought of cargill (used to work for them too) taking over this chunk of business, at least i know cargill isn't keeping their prices artificially low by utilizing a labor force that cuts corners on food safety and security... they have too much to lose to risk it...

Will clamping down on illegal immigration raise prices? On some things... things like meat, the actual dollar figure will go up... but in relatively little time the economy will adjust and your wage will still purchase the same amount of meat that it always has...

Things like landscaping? You'll see 2 things... the first is the return of neighborhood kids to manual labor, something i see as long overdue... the second is the return of the homeowner investing his own time in his own land, again, something i view as long overdue..

Polititians have always done crap like this! But to their opponents! Unethical? Sure. Illegal? Should be. They lie, spread rumors, do whatever they can get away with. It's not unsual.
Power leads to cheating....but

Trump is changing the entire global adversarial/ally dynamic because of his undeniable secret connection or debt to Putin.
