Right Jim, that is what seems to be distracting the bird while the cat is sneaking up on him.

Ooops! My eyes aren't as good as they used to be. I saw a big snapping turtle at our ranch this week running across the yard that looked identical to that picture.

Too small for a grouse. I see head feathers. Quail?
