When I started smoking cigars a few months ago I bought a Colibri lighter (don't know the model) and some Colibri fuel. It worked fine for a while but now I can't get it to light reliably, even when it's full of fuel. The problem seems to go in spurts.

I wonder if the fuel has impurities and if this might be the cause of the problem. If so, is there a way to get it cleared out so it will light every time (or almost every time anyway)?

Purge the tank until you can't hear the "air" coming out of it anymore. Then empty it some more to make sure. Refill with your Colibri fuel and you should be fine. Even from the factory they put massive pressure into those lighters that can't be replicated ay home.

yeaup. clear it out good. Also, if you have some compressed air like they use to work on electronics, you can give it a blast. Then check your adjustment on the flame. Light it with another lighter and make sure the flame is set to the right height.

Possible BIGtime problem that's not yet mentioned ... what fuel did you use to refill it ??

Whatever the brand, you really do want to be using triple refined or better fuel ... Colibri's own brand is a good choice, but so are several others including the LAVA quintuple refined product I'm using ... WalMart crap like Ronson is nothing but lighter poison and IMO, should come with a skull and crossbones on the label ...

As mentioned, you DO need to purge your lighter ... use something small enough to push on the little fill spout gizzy until there's no sound of air/gas coming out of the lighter ... then refill, using triple or better refined fuel ... next, you quite easily could need to adjust the flame level upward ... there's a small SLOTTED screw near the fill spout that typically needs to be turned counter clockwise to increase the flame ... do not undo the phillips head screw in error.
This is all because the factory fill that the lighter comes with is under more pressure than your refill can can deal with ... residual pressure is obstructing the intake and, after you've released that, you still need to turn up the flame because it was initially set for fuel being delivered at a higher rate of prressure.

Finally ... consider what lighter you're gonna want to buy to replace that Colibri ... hey, this is just MY opinion, but every single one I've ever had has failed ... sure I could've sent it back for warranty repair, but the cost to do so is about the same as buying a so-so lighter like the one I got from my local store that's guaranteed for life ... when it fails (and it will) I get to take it into the store, they toss it in a box under the counter and hand me a new lighter ... bingo.

There's several high quality brands though and if that's the route you wanna take, let me recommend Prometheus ...

If a lighter won't work with LAVA, it won't work!

I just bought a can of First Light ( its made by Colibri) 3x refined retail about 8.95 for 250ml. Great stuff
