I say some cheap tupperware at the Target down in Bloomington (I moved back into IU today), and got an idea.

Since I'm currently parted from my humi, and I had some sticks I was afraid would dry, I decided to make a couple of tupperdors.

I got a few sheets of cedar from the tobacco shop down in the College Mall in Bloomington (which I discovered carries four different kinds of OpusX, so I might be doing some trades in the future 😉, lined the bottom of the tupperdor with that, and placed in one of those Clima-Guard humidifying tubes.

Do all you experienced coolerdor and tupperdor builders think this is enough to stash some smokes? Or is there something else I should do? Will a Clima-Guard tube be good enough to humidify about 30 or 40 cigars?

I'd make my own humidifier if I was you.

Clima's would dry up real quick in a plastic box that big.

My Clima sticks don't seem to do much at all ... they'd have a real hard time keeping that many sticks moist.

What I did is buy some big thick kitchen sponge that says it's anti-bacterial, a couple soap-boxes, and some of those stackable plastic sliding drawers. The sponge holds water a LOT longer than florist foam. I cut it to size so it would fit in the soap-box, then drilled some holes in the box. They do great! Maybe I'll take some pics sometime.

what exactly do you mean by a soap box? Is that the plastic container you put soap in when you go on vacation?

Yes. I've got a 25 count humidor that I use a sponge in...there's an old post about that...I drilled 16 1/4 holes into the top...put a lil 50/50(although I was experimenting with using just distilled water)and VIOLA!

No no, a soap box is what you stand on when you want to know if people want you to stay or go 🙂

You may as well build a good sized one for all the boxes you're about to buy.

Call some local florists and ask for a block of Oasis foam. I paid around $3 for mine. Buy a small tupperware container (like around 2"H X 5"W X 9"L) and cut your foam to fit inside. Then drill a bunch of holes in the lid. Use a good size drill bit to save time.

Buy a pint or so of Propylene Glycol from a drug store. I got mine at Rite Aid for $9. Buy a quart tupperware bottle with measuring lines. Mix your pint of PG with a pint of distilled water in your measuring bottle. Pour that into your Oasis stuffed tupperware container until saturated and Bam! You got a homemade credo that will keep your stoges at a near perfect 70%.

You won't have to refill this for several months unless you're in Arizona. When you do, use only distilled water. You shouldn't have to recharge with 50/50 for a few years with this big a' rig.

The other option is to fill your homemade credo w/Climmax beads instead of foam and PG The cost is similar. You will only need a 1/2 # or so. I'm switching to these, but can't personally comment yet. Everyone with experience with this stuff seems to be thrilled. Do a search both here and Google/Yahoo.

Either way, make sure to open your Tupperdor now and then or you'll have a nasty ammonia smell.

I'd be careful about using new tupperware dish because, when sealed up, they tend to smell like the plastic.

I've used a cookie tin and a popcorn can with great success. They're sturdy, they seal well, they keep light out and the bigger ones have room for the box, too.

As far as the credo goes, I've tried the soap box and I think its too much work for what you get. Just buy one or two plastic ones (similar to what you got with your humidor) from the tobacco store, or order 'em from CBid. Velcro tape can be bought at any craft store and *presto* you've got your humidification system. Also, if you glue a magnet to the back of the credos instead of velcro tape, you can move 'em around until you find the right balance to keep the can at the RH you want.

Damn! Sorry about the double post. Still don't know how I do that. Seems to happen more frequently after my 3rd or 4th brandy. Can't figure out if there's any correlation!
