The green fairy is now a friend of mine... I found a starter kit for Absinth with two glasses, two spoons and a bottle for 30 Euro. Figures I'd find it a week before I leave Europe.

If it is TRUE Absinth, that stuff will hurt you... seriously. I bought a bottle of the stuff that the makers did a chemical analysis of the original to ensure the taste was the same but with no halucinegenic effects of the real stuff. It still sucked, but then again I don't like licorice.

BTW, Wormword is the key ingrediant that makes you see things:-)

Make sure your bottle has the Worm Wood Oil in it. Thats the "special" ingredient. I have a bottle that does not have the oil in it that I bought in Spain. You can buy the good stuff for about $100 online 🙂

I have a bottle of Mari Mayans absinthe from Spain which I'm waiting to crack open one day. It is 144 proof. Supposedly, it is the chemical thujone in absinthe that is connected with all the myths about madness. Then again, there are those who say that the so-called myths are true. In large amounts thujone is dangerous. Of course, by the time you consume enough absinthe to take in a lethal dose of thujone, alcohol poisoning would kill you first.

Good times.

I've always wanted to try absinthe. I always thought it looked so intriguing after seeing it in movies such as "Bram Stoker's Dracula" or "From Hell", and seeing the old Belle Epoche advertisement posters for it back from the 1800's.

I do believe true absinthe is illegal in the US (because of the mentioned thujone chemical), and it's semi-legal in the UK through some legal loophole.

Many scholars and scientists have put forth the theory that Van Gogh's paintings have that strange blurry, smeared look to them because that's how he actually saw the world through his eyes...and that his vision was altered through the excess absinthe drinking he indulged in.

Hmmm,
So I broke US law, when I put that wormwood. and Anise, in that bottle of 100 proof vodka, last year. I had forgotten about that, up until I saw this post. I followed a recipie, that I saw somewhere, probably in one of an ex's books she left behind, when she moved out, she was a witch, and a bitch, but that's another thread. I guess, in a couple of weeks, when the doctor tells me it's OK the drink again, the meds I currently take will not allow it, I will attempt to destroy the evidence. LOL.

That stuff can become a habit! Wasn't there an early fictional detective with an Absinthe jones?

I'm not sure as to the Wormwood content of this bottle. My German is a little rusty. I'm going to try to get a bottle of it from eabsinth.com and see what there's is like. This stuff was 55% alcohol. It is licorice flavored like sambucca or Ouzo. Weird thing was no hang over the next day. Never had that after being that drunk. As for seeing anything... Not with this bottle. I was mainly just sauced.

In the US, you can have it and drink it, but you can't buy, sell or import it. The wormwood attributes are mostly apocryphal. The hyssop which is unregulated will affect you more. Van Gogh came from a line of loonies. His brother committed suicide unrelated to any chemical imbibement. Vincent also ate his paints and drank his turpentine. I would hesitate to blame absinthe for his peculiarities.

So eating paint chips and drinking turpentine is a bad thing?

Note to self...Don't invite these guys to my Super Bowl party.
