I know I'm inviting all the snart-ass responses, but I did try to search for items on this topic before I posted, so here goes.

If you have a regular round cigar, take the label off, and then cut the cigar, does it matter which end you light? I smoke lots of CAOs and usually take the bands off to save them and sometimes after I cut it I put it down to grab for the lighter or beer of kids and then pick it up to light it and go HHMMMMMMMM? Now which end should I light?

So does it matter? It's all the same tobacco, right?

If it's cut properly, you should still see some of the cap left. That's the end you put in your mouth. You light the other end. Then you take puffs to get the smoke into your mouth. Then..... 🙂 -LOL

While many cigars are consistent in their filler from cap to foot, others are not. The rollers may be instructed where to place various leaves of tobacco to achieve changes in taste throughout the cigar. Generally, as you smoke a cigar you may find distinct changes in flavor. Part of that change is the diminished size of the cigar, but it's also because of the relative location of the filler leaves. If you begin smoking the cigar with the foot in your mouth, the cigar may smoke differently than the blender intended. It may not be worse, but different.

If you try to light the wrong end, you'll have to blow into it for over and hour!

the wrapper is rolled from bottom to top. if you light the head, the wrapper will unwrap.

Ok yes I had to much too drink one night (ok timan, more than once) and I did this to a LGC it smoked fine but what the heck the rum was really really good.

What Rick said: light it from the wrong end and it will unravel.

Nifty trick: Take a quillotine type cutter and lay flat on the table or other hard surface. Place the head of the cigar in the cutter opening, and press gently but firmly against the table, holding the cigar straight upright.

Clip the cigar with the cutter, which is still laying flat on the table. Perfect cut every time.

OK, they are rolled with the intention that you not light the wrong end. Sometimes there is inferior tobacco at the end that goes into your mouth, since it is not meant to be burned. At least this may be the case with higher quality cigars. Cheapies, who knows.
This is mainly true with short-filler cigars.

Expanding on SteveR's post, a cigar is often overfilled near the band which is where you will tend to hold it with your fingers. This keeps it from squashing a bit as the cigar is smoked. So one end is different than the other.

If you can't tell the difference of the ends after cutting you must be cutting off too much. It may unravel on you if you smoke from the cut end.

But enough of all this etiquette, I mean snobbery. Smoke it the way you like to!

The most important thing to remember is that, once lit, never put THAT end in your mouth...

On a serious note, you're cutting off way too much if you can't tell the difference. Just clip the very top of the cap, or go to torps.
