Why is a box pressed cigar always referred to as being in the "cuban tradition"? I've smoked several ISOM's and none of them have been box pressed. What happened to the tradition?

Cuban cigars by the box are usually box pressed. That is they are packed so tightly in the box that they acquire naturally flattened sides, from being pressed together in the box. It is not the same extreme box presses on some cigars today that is acheived from presses, but the same idea.

I don't believe they are "squared" the way some of the cigars are that I have ordered box pressed! Charlie

i have one of the old 12 tray box press that i found in a vegas junk yard in perfect condition. each tray has a lip on both sides, one in ther middle, and the front. rollers would put one or two more fresh cigars in each side of the tray than it should hold, and than stack the next tray on, and on until the top, a one inch board with edges to prevent it from pushing too hard into the cigars, and two metal brackets one on each side are slid over the top and the mold set aside to cure. this set up is for a 5 inch cigar. this was the "cuban tradition" not all cigars were cured that way but all cigars cured that way came from cuba. no digital camera, but i'll be happy to send some polaroids if you are interested.
