Opatience,
I too am in a humid climate, (Houston). There are a couple of things you can do to lower the humidity. First an empty humidor is not a true indication of what will take place when you fill it, but actually beside the point.
Do you use PG solution? If you do and you've been mixing a 50/50 mixure, try changing it to 60/40 in favor of more PG. Use just enough to moisturize the humidifiers. If the humidity rises, the extra PG should allow you humifiers to absorb the excess moisture.
If that still doesn't get the results you desire, try adding cedar sheets or strips from cigar boxes to your humidor. I do this with all my humidors. I put a strip of cedar over the cigars that are directly under or next to the humidfiers.
I use a mixture of 65% PG to 35% distilled water in my Cuban humidor and it keeps a perfect 62-65%. 60% PG in my others maintains a 68%-70% in my non Cuban humidors.
Hope this helps,
Barry
