BUCKB --- Welcome aboard, but I apologize ... I'm really having some difficulty reading your post.

When you type in all 'CAPS' ... it means you are yelling at your reader, and hard to read. Also, with a little better punctuation, it may be easier to understand ...

One thing I did pick up ... is you speak of 'paper' wrappers. What cigars are you smoking that have 'paper' wrappers?

That just may be your problem ... as with 'premium' cigars, I've rarely had any problems with the wrapper coming off ... ever.

Slimboli,
I am new to the world of cigar smoking and my terminology may not be entirely correct. When I reference the word "wrappers" I meant the outside leaf of the cigar. I smoke 'premium' cigars and this happens to some of the exact same brand and not others. The outside leaf of the cigar becomes unraveled. My question is why would this be?

My humidor is set at 67%---is this the correct setting? If not, what should it be?

Thanks for any suggestions.

67 should be fine ... although it is said tat for some cigars, 70 is better ...

I like to keep my 'maduro' around the '65 to 67' percent range ... they seem to smoke better.

Also, I've never had a problem with any of my wrappers unraveling ...

Buckb, were they all from the same box? Your problem may have begun at the factory. Perhaps they were allowed to dry out before you got them? 67RH is definitely not the problem. Is your temperature around 70 degrees?

Oh, and welcome abuckboard.

Buckb,

If the head (the unlit end) is unravelling, you might be cutting too much off. Don't clip off all of the "cap", the piece that's wrapped around and covering the head.

If unravelling is at the foot (lit end) then I don't know... that shouldn't be occurring often, even with average quality cigars.

Buck: I could be stating the obvious, but since you're new I'll bring it up - check the calibration and function of your hygrometer. I recall with my first humidor I had an analog hygrometer. My sticks ended up bone dry and flaking apart. The hygrometer read 68%. What was the deal? A couple of taps on the glass and the stuck needle dropped to 55%. Lesson learned. Welcome to the forum!

hey, buckb, welcome aboard.

i have the unraveling problem with some connecticut shade wrappers -- especially those that are more tan than golden in color. i've kept some at 67% and others at 70-72%, but it doesn't seem to matter. they're just thin, delicate wrappers and i have bad luck with some of them, no matter how gently i treat them, how humidified they are, etc.

one thing i will say is that this has happened to me with thin CTSH wrappers both after letting a stick rest for 3-4 mos and also right after purchasing it from a local tobacconist. again, it's never a problem with other wraps, just the tannish, thin CTSH variety.

Buck what they all said I had 2 tottaly unwrap on my brother and the second on a friend:( The 1st on was totally dried out, the guy I bought it from checked his supply of this smoke and they were ALL like that. The second one was tougher to figure out. I THINK it was due to the gar being left in a travel humi too long, a few days. It did not have a real tight sealed. Good Luck Rob

Weird, I have never had this happen. I'd go with the calibration suggestion.

and if the calibration is right smack on target?

What Slim said. Also, if you're carrying them around in the winter, don't light them cold. I learned this traveling year-around. You take a cigar out of the car that's cold and spark it up right away, the wrapper will flake apart (Cammy or Natural) as soon as the heat starts to go through the cigar. The temperature change is too rapid. Let it warm up to room temperature and there's no problem.

Thanks Slim, this post is a friend of mine I turned on to cigars and this site. Your initial reply is your typical demeaning additude when you get a bug up your ass.

Contrary to what others posted, I am beginning to believe the issue you describe is a construction problem.

Certainly, dramatic humidity changes or delicate wrappers can cause this problem, but I've had boxes inwhich a large number of smokes unravelled. I think they forgot the glue.

Paint on a little pectin and put 'em back in the humidor if you notice this before lighting.
