I have 4 of UM's cigars I got in a trade. They have a very light wrapper so they could be the shade grown ones. I noticed today that they have a green color to them in parts, it looks like it is mainly concentrated round the veins. I didn't notice it the other day when I received them, but I didn't have such good lighting as I did today.

So is it mold or is it normal?
I have removed then from the box just incase.

can you brush it off? it could just be the color of the leaf (lack of aging/fermenting) do a search for mold - someone posted a great pic a while ago

Nope I can brush it off, and it kind of looks like it may be under or in the wrapper. I am just wanting to be careful, would hate to have everything go moldy:(
Great point about searching btw, going to do that right now 🙂

Mold will be fuzzy and either green or blue-green. Sounds like what you have is discoloration in the wrapper. X

Sorry that should have read can't brush it off, I tried wiping it off with a damp cloth and it wouldn't budge either.

I once dissected a cigar( a very good name brand too) and found a few leaves from the binder that had green spots on the leaf. I thought maybe the leaf suffered from a disease or something, and never really thought about it. But after reading this post, I wonder if a cigar can get mold from the inside out. If the mold spores are present in the inside, and the humidity is right, the mold might grow from the inside, and you would never see it.

Well, hopefully someone can help this situation out, and maybe explain to me about the green spots I found on the binder leaves.

Fudge, I agree w/XXIMBUMBERO- sounds like discoloration. Are they seconds?

They are unbanded bundled cigars from Uncle M, I don't believe they are seconds, but the quality isn't going to be right up there either I wouldn't think. They do appear to be nicely constructed and I know quite a few people really like them 🙂

Wrapper discoloration, although not particularly pleasing to look at, doesn't affect a cigars taste, burn, etc., IMO. Some of the better cigars I have smoked have had discoloration..........and no, you cannot wipe it off. It's an intregal part of the leaf.

Mold on the other hand, as I've recently found out, can ruin the taste of a cigar. It can be difficult to tell the difference, but as a rule, if you can see mold on the outside of the cigar, whether it originated inside or not, you should be able to dislodge some of it. It will also have the characteristic "musty" odor, particularly if moistened. If you can't dislodge it, and you can't smell it when moistened, chances are it's discoloration, not mold. The caveat........."CHANCES ARE"...............I would segregate the cigar(s) any way, just to be on the safe side. Just my thoughts...............
