everybody has thier favorite stick they like to keep handy .....but when you try a new one that you've never tried before..... and after lighting it up ...find that you really don't care for it. should you a. tuff it out and see if it changes to the better ? b. toss it and remember ?
I for one really hate to be wastful...especially since this was a gift ! it was a fantastic gift..smelled good ( pre-lit ) but after i got it lit and had a few draws.........i didn't care for the taste.
what would you do or have done ??

I usually try to finish something someone gave me, but I let an Acid that was recommended to me by a salesman at a tobacco shop die 1/3 of the way thru!

the other night I finally found a gar that I didn't like - I toughed it out till maybe mid through and then said ICKY I can't go the rest of the way. It came in a nice little wrapper and all - guess packaging doesn't make a diff sometimes LOL - it was a cao criollo BLECH lol lol

i'll smoke it through unless the effect is too adverse (i.e.-- gives me that pre-puke feeling! lol).

i've had several cigars start out being "eh-- so-so" or downright UNgood at first and then get really nice as it smoked on down. for that reason alone i'll take a cigar at LEAST past the half-way mark.

if it's a gift, i'll try to make it to 2/3 even if i don't like it. like someone mentioned, i hate to be wasteful, and i especially hate to let a gift cigar go without giving it every chance. i assume the person who gave it to me saw something good about the cigar and wanted me to enjoy it similarly.

well, except smelly4tay, as we all KNOW that all HE gives out are pure dog rockets! (i shouldn't even HAVE to tell you all that i'm kidding!). 🙂

if i purchased it, i feel that i've more entitlement to trash it if i don't enjoy it by the midway point.

OMG!! Waste a smoke. Are you people crazy. If you light it up... you finish it. That's the rule! Finish the dang thing. If it doesn't taste good... smoke another one tomorrow. After three, you'll find you like the darn thing. (except for dog rockets). I've yet to find a "quality" aka premium smoke that I thought was unsmokeable. But... hey!! That's just me!!!

I have had a few I couldn't smoke. I had a blenders gold that tasted like my lawn rolled up in cardboard that didn't last 3 mins. Ive had a few different cheap cigars that almost made halfway but not quite. And I had a small padron (corona sized maybe) that I tossed at 1/3rd into because it tasted very metallic. Was like sucking on a metal pipe. But most of the time if I just think that a cigar isn't very good, or kind of boring, or something along those lines ill make it past half at least if not finish it.

I'm with CW ......it was an acid....now i like most of drew estates stuff but this was ....too different for me ! i've got two more "different" ones left...hope they are good ! i'll relight the one and give it to half way ! i owe the gifter that much respect ! decent looking smoke too ! smelled good when i wiffed it........i'm gonna do it....to half way at least !
i'll not waste a gift ! as i do apreciate them ands don't want to hurt future chances at treats !!! 🙂

I would tuff it out no matter what to at least the half-way point, and if everything besides the taste was going well(i.e. it smelled ok, was burning evenly, had a nice ash) I would try to finish it. If it didn't improve I would still try one more stick if I had it before I gave up on the brand altogether.

ok , i tuffed it out...and at least on this one occasion i did think it got better as it went along. so it wasn't wasted ( which makes me feel better ) ! i'd probably smoke another one but i know not to buy a box...maybe a couple and "try" to age a couple just to see.

Liz...
sounds like a CAO Criollo... probably a tad strong for your sensitive and new tastes. I used to hate the stronger/more intense cigars and now enjoy them. Keep smoking what you currently like and you may find you'll like em a little stronger later on down the road.

Look for your and Clive's little care package either tomorrow or Tuesday and let me know what you think.

Cheers,

If the draw is really bad and I can't improve it by using the poker or rolling it in my fingers, I'll let it die. I lit up a gifted stick yesterday during the ball game. It had a terrible draw from the start. I tried the poker but no luck. I let it die after fighting my way about halfway through it. It started giving me a headache.

As far as taste goes, unless it is extremely unpleasent I will try to work my way through it.

Liz, the CAO Criollo is quite a bit stronger than those flavored sticks you like. It's probably going to be awhile before you develop a taste for them.

I say definitely tough it out and see if it changes. I'm not a fan of really peppery smokes. But if one starts out really spicy and peppery I always give it until at least mid way. The character changes and there is always something worth salvaging. You never how your tastes change. The first time I tried scotch I didn't like it either. But boy howdy has that changed.

I used to hang with a smoke, almost from a feeling of obligation or fear of waste, even if I couldn't stand the taste. Nowadays, I just figure life is too short to be not enjoying the cigar at hand when I have many more to choose from. This isn't a common occurance these days, but if a cigar is truly underwhelming or burning very badly, I won't waste my time. Out it goes!
