I have just come out from lurking for a while, and I seem to see an attitude about cigars that concerns me. IMHO, cigars are primarily a celebration. Whether that is for something big, or as simple as enjoying the day, that is of course up to the smoker. Those who are new to this may worry too much about humidity/temperature, what is "the best", may be missing the point....Relax, enjoy the smoke. Breathe with the cigar, and ENJOY the cigar...see how lucky we are....Again, this is my humble opinion.

Good point Korn.. but for some, it's gone beyond just a celebration to a hobby... and for some, even further to an obsession.

It would be an obsession for me if I had the money and time 🙂.

korn.....I hear what you are saying..........and I agree with your analysis in some, perhaps most, instances. However, I, like a lot of other BOTL on the board, don't see 'gars as just a celebration. Some of us, including me, smoke cigars on a regular basis. We also have a tendency to divide cigars into catagories, i.e., I have cigars that I consider my "everyday smoke", 'gars that I smoke for special/recurring occasions, and 'gars for special occasions that don't come along except once in a lifetime. In effect, it is a personal choice as to how we treat 'gars, and how we smoke them. Your statement tends to be too global and too stereotypical, in my opinion.....

Again, it is an individual interperation and others may not feel as I do. However, that is what makes this board great, in my opinion. It allows for individualality, personal opinion, radical thinking, disagreement, fussing, if needed, and still accepts you as an individual.

The one thing most of us do not want is to be fitted into a compartment that we don't agree with.

Just my thoughts..........of course I could be wrong............

When I read kornazoo's initial post, I thought it was right on track. "Relax, (...)ENJOY the cigar...see how lucky we are." ['Don't worry - Be happy']

Good advice, IMHO. I'm not criticizing any posts (nor do I think was kornazoo)

I'm a hobby-addict, I've been through several 🙂

In every hobby community there are those who compete for the prize, whatever that might be. Part of the ENJOYMENT of the hobby for these people is the attainment of... whatever it is.

With cigars I see the potential prize as:

A) Knowledge of what's good, ESPECIALLY when based on personal experience

B) Posession of rare items

C) Posession of illegal items

D) Bragging rights. Size does matter after all.

Just my opinion, my wife generally says I'm probably wrong.

I appreciate everyones comments. Some of the best advice I got years ago, when I first took a leap and set up a humidor, (as oppossed to buying a couple of cigars at a time), was that I should try to not treat my humidor as a "parent w/ a newborn", i.e., checking on it(obsessively), every 10 minutes, it would be okay! But it may be something everyone goes thru.. The intent of my post was NOT to judge anyone or criticize anyone. My "style" of smoking cigars may not be for everyone...For me, in best circumstances, smoking a cigar helps me both relax,(there's that word again),and focus...(a celebration in itself for me)...So anyone who felt disrespected...Sorry about that, it wasn't my intent.....On a different note, thanks are due to CigarBid and especially this forum; my cigar "experiences" have changed due to the above..Before, I smoked only ISOM and Fuentes....Now...Gurkha, Torano and others have broadened my "experience"...So THANKS to all...

Let me make this perfectly clear. I LOVE my cigars.

I love to smoke them, I love to fondle them and feel their oils on my skin. I love the way they smell. I love the way they taste. I love to study the tooth of the wrapper and the color of the leaves.

I dream of cigars when I am asleep, and I dream of them during the day when I am unable to smoke them.

They are a huge part of my life. I think I would rather give up an ear than my favorite sticks. 🙂

So, yes, let us celebrate life though the love and devotion we share with our cigars.

Me personally... I am in an evolution process. First was the introduction. Then came the experimentation, followed by the addiction. I'm working my way from hobby to obsession right now, and fortunately for me after being at the same job for almost 17 years and my wife at hers for almost 11 years and one child who is now 15... I can afford to be a "little" obsessed.

ditto

I want to add that I like to age cigars

Too many years ago when CA vinters didn't hold over bottles, I started buying & cellaring

Gave that up but like to let the tobacco tastes develop

As with inexpensive wines, inexpensive cigars tend to be a gamble

Heck, even some of the premiums boxed in slidetops can disappoint BUT the game is entertaining

Thanks again to all the folk who shared on this thread
