Hey, newbie, some of us have actually discussed this occurance it believe it or not, most of us are actually aware that some people may pay more than what your humble opinion warrants as a reasonable bid. Here's some light reading that you may enjoy:

What's up with this bidding? I know these can be bought retail for way less money. I just don't get it. I mean, this is great for c-bid. Someone needs to make up for the losses they must have by the great deals we all get. But I can't in my right mind see bidding this high when I can take a ride to my local shop and pay at least $50 less than they're going for here. What's the deal-e-o???

nope.

I saw a box of Toraño 1916 Cameroons go for $130 the other day. I KNOW they can be had for around $50-60 a box! Just realize that these people are subsidizing us 'bottom feeders' and if everyone was as cheap as we are, cbid couldn't stay in business, so like someone else said on another thread, bid high and bid often!
Author: usahog Date: 02/25/2004 11:14 PM Reply
can you say stupid??? I would pay 12.00 a pop for them and cheaper online... but somebody's got some extra cash to burn... maybe the guy/gal is going through a divorce and just wigged out a bit??

At first I was amazed as well. But, when you divide the final price by number of sticks, the price is $12.44 per. I'm not saying that's a good deal, but I know in SoCal it's hard to find these below $15 a stick. So is it really that bad a deal???
I know I wouldn't pay it, but then again, if they're your favorite smoke and you can't find them anywhere?? Who's to say. As they say "it's all relative."
Oh yeah, and I do know where you can get the Maduro Monarco for less (on the internet of course).

Hey CW,
E-mail me where I can get a box
of 1916's for 50-60 bucks.
Thanks,

sluggo819,
dont tell him that he over paid, it keeps this place up and running and other cigars can sell at lower prices.

If he over paid it was only by a little unless you all have way better sources than I do. And I least he spent it on the best. I say if you want them bid on them and I hope he enjoys them.

Don't forget to include your local taxes on these if you're buying in the shop. It's only 17% for me in Ohio, but MUCH higher elsewhere. Plus, Cbid doesn't list other retail internet sites (imagine that! LOL!)like some other non-auction boards. So, maybe this is the only place they know where to get them. Hey, it's all good. It keeps Cbid up and running.

PAMs are hard to get some places. Because of this, they sometimes have a ridiculous mark up! Prices are relative for these.

A perennial question
Occasionally this feels like an economics discussion board
OK, can we say "Auctions & Bidding," way back in 1987?
Consider 🅰 INDEPENDENT-PRIVATE VALUES MODEL: 'At one extreme, suppose each bidder knows precisely how highly he values the item.'
Consider 🅱 ASYMMETRIC BIDDERS.
Once again, asked & answered
[just kidding]
Personally, I buy cigars low so I can light them with high denomination foreign banknotes! For the same cost as "retail" I can act out my fantasy of being "a swell"
Author: drnos Date: 02/26/2004 09:35 AM Reply
A good deal is a state of mind.
Author: djheater Date: 02/26/2004 10:55 AM Reply
Agreed.
The bidder always pays exactly what they're worth TO THEM.
I think we should start threads about people who start threads about overbidders.
Perhaps it is so frequently asked because on some level, as deal seekers and BOTL's we want to invite "those poor saps" into our "club". Consider, they may not want to join.

Might I recommend Turkish Lire? At 1.69 Million:1 exchange rate, you can light your gar with six zeros for under a buck! (Just don't do it in Turkey, where desacrating their money is considered to be disrespectful to Ataturk, who is like George Washingtion to them, and you will be jailed!)

I always use non-US currency & never leave the good ol'USA in order to avoid losing a hand for using the local Jose Martì's likeness for such porpoises

....For Padron 64s and Ashton VSGs that CBID is now offering, it is simple supply and demand. Many don't have the supply.
....For many other cigars, the answer is irrational exuberance.

Commented stuff tends to rise in price for a while. There are still some Fabuloso bargains to be had.
Author: Homebrew Date: 02/19/2004 08:49 PM Reply
I have found, that the prices are in a cyclical pattern.
The prices rise and fall. As new people discover cbid, they tend to go a little crazy, I know I did, buying their favorites, at what they consider great prices. As they are here for awhile they see others getting much better prices, and their maximum bids go down.

Keep in mind that, during the winter months, people spend more time inside and probably in front of their computer. They get bored and probably bid more.
Author: bassdude Date: 02/19/2004 10:04 PM Reply
Homie summed it up. With patience you can almost always get what you want for a very reasonable price. Like my box of LPH Blacks.

i was just feeling the urge to go for it but i think i'll hang back till tide drops a little more. too deep for me at the moment !
it'll be spring soon.....i don't mind waiting......
What is it with some of these people. Just now, I again witnessed some Bozo that bid $7.00 more (for a 5-pack)than you can buy them for -RETAIL- on the internet! ...and it justed opened TODAY. Is it they have more money than brains. I'm seeing this more and more, lately. Saw one a few weeks ago that went for $16 OVER retail. What the heck are you goof-balls doing. GO TO THE STORE OR ORDER DIRECTLY OFF THE INTERNET (IF YOU WANT TO PAY THOSE PRICES) AND LET THE REST OF US BID A SAVE A BUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think the forum should add another rule to its list. No asking why people pay more then retail. No need to be a crybaby just because someone jacked the price up on something you wanted. Would you still complain if they went to a dollar under retail or retail? Then you still wouldn't get a bargain, so would you cry then too?
Author: KNOF Date: 02/10/2004 08:13 PM Reply
Do a search before they outbid you. When they outbid you and pay more than retail, relax another auction for the same will start soon. Until then enjoy a smoke and stay at the mad house, I mean forum, heheheee. When idividuals spend more than retail, I say thank you for keeping CBid in business!!! LOL!
Remember not everyone knows about CBid and CI. A good friends brother I was talking to at a Superbowl party told me he buys his cigars from Cigar International, but he knew nothing about CBid. Lets see if he figures it out.
You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make them drink.
Relax and enjoy that smoke,

Just bid what YOU are willing to pay for various lots. Then sit back and see what happens. If you're overbid, do the same thing when new lots come out, etc. However, there is a danger here; occasionally there is very little overbidding..........and suddenly you found you've won everything, or almost, that you've bid on..........talk about an approach/avoidance situation...........

let the others pay more and that will end your problem of paying more than retail. i bid what i'm "willing" to pay for it...not just to win! you get caught up in a bidding war...your out money!

First: I have never read nor posted on this forum, so I would not know that this topic was previously discussed and is now a "Dead Horse". EXCUSE ME!
Second: I did not get beat out on a bid to which I am 'Complaining' nor did I ask for information on how I should conduct my bidding. READ THE QUESTION.
Third: I asked a simple question to which I expected an INTELLIGENT response, of which I did not get, due to all you self-centered, egotistical blow-hards with a terminal case of rectal/cranial inversion.
Lastly: I imagine all you Cbidding "Wizards" will jump all over this with your 'more wonderful than thou' wit. Keep it. I won't be back to post again nor will I bother to come back to read your titillating repartee. If, in the future, if I need denigrating, obnoxious jack-offs to badger me over a simple question, I'll go into politics.

WOW, tempermental Neanderthal! Sometimes, though, it does feel good to beat something even if it's dead. Just yesterday I went to one of those cheap cigarette stores that also happens to sell cigars and they were asking $12 for a sungrown chateau fuente. Ouch! talk about gouging. Anyway, I didn't buy anything because I couldn't decide whether or not I should remove the cello.

Clive bids all the time - BUT he has a bid limit that he adheres to. if it goes past that he usually stops bidding and waits till whatever it is comes around again. going over retail price is a persons right - if it isn't for you than don't do it. if you want a particular cigar and you are jonesing for is that bad - just pay retail for it, I don't see the big deal unless of course it is up there in price. Like I said just wait for it to come around again, see if anyone on the boards have any they would like to part with until you can get a box or whatever. the BOTL's are godsends when you are in need of something. they are more than happy to give up a few to help out a fellow BOTL or SOTL 🙂 Patience is also a virtue!
