I use only distilled water in my humidifiers and so far I have been doing fine. I'll be deploying in June and have to trust my 15 year old son to take care of my sticks. Should I stick with the distilled water or switch to the solution? Veterans please advise... mayday, mayday.

MACS,

You can make a credo out of a plastic soap dish. Drill holes in the top, fill it up with Climmax, add distilled h2o, done. I prefer the 65% type, BTW as many here do. You can do the same thing with a small tupperware container like I did. You can also take apart your standard round or square credos and fill 'em with the stuff. I think the ratio is 1# of Climmax/5 cubic feet of humi. Error toward a little more than you think you need. You'll likely use it later.

Many others like to put the climmax media into the foot of nylons and tie a knot in the top. Haven't tried it yet but others have reported it works quite well...

how the heck do you get the plastic apart in the round credos that come with most humis? does it require tools? super human strength?

I don't think you do...you just put the solution or water through the slots or holes. imho

For smaller humidors (300ct & below), 35mm film canisters work quite well when filled with beads and distilled water. You will need to drill small holes in the top but you can use several of them if needed, and they don't really take up much room. BTW, be careful not to add TOO much distilled water. Just my thoughts............

So I buys a pound of this stuff... stuff it into some type of canister and wet it with distilled h2o? Thats it? And it maintains the perfect humidity?

I also seen some jars of crystals on CI that claims to do the same.

Cavallo - I got an El Rey 150 glass top and my credos come apart with just a little coaxing...

thanks, TR -- yeah, i've been filling it like that, no problem. i was thinking of prying it open to fill it with the climmax beads, though -- i've tried a couple times before and the thing just WILL not budge. lol

shawn, i better send this credo your way and get YOU to open the thing! 🙂

I wouldn't worry too much about the humidity, I'd worry about my 15 yr old with a humidor full of cigars. Are you going to leave him in charge of the wine celler too? LMAO!!! I'm just having a flashback to my younger days.

Every 15 y/o that I have seen that tried a cigar regretted it dearly.

Cavallo,

It's not easy. I was able to coax mine open with my Leatherman's blade. You would want to do that anyway if it was filled with oasis foam to replace it once a year.

*** "So I buys a pound of this stuff... stuff it into some type of canister and wet it with distilled h2o? Thats it? And it maintains the perfect humidity?" ***

Yes. Like arwings said, don't add too much. Just enough to moisten them without excess water. If your humidity then runs too high (too much water), just run a hair dryer over the beads for a bit and try again.

For that size of humi, you won't need too much. Remember 1#/5 cubic feet.

1. Take 3 inside measurements of the humi in inches.

2. Divide each one by 12.

3. Multiply the 3 for cubic feet. Probably a little less than 1 so 1/5 of the pound (example)

I got an El Rey 150 and now a 250 treasure dome on the way. I'm addicted to this site... I think the 2 small round credos I got in the 150 will do the trick and then the small credo for the 25 should be good. I'm sure the treasure dome is going to come with a couple also, i'll just pull out the sponges and stick the climmax in. Thanks guys for the advice!

I use nothing but distilled water.

Solution is great if you need to worry about the humidity getting higher than 75% in your humidor and it needs to be brought down. However here in Colorado, that is never a problem. The problem is getting enough water in, not getting water out.

So, count me as using only distilled water.
