Because Clinton didn't want to help them! He was briefed as this was prepping to go full scale. The aircrash escalated the debacle and he kept US forces from acting in an expeditious fashion to stop the factions from killing on a mass level.

You know, you just can’t win. If we show pictures of our troops helping Iraqis, then we’re told about all those other countries that are repressed. If we talk about liberating people under a terrorist state, we hear what about all the other countries that sponsor terrorism. However, if we talk about liberating them… then we’re called warmongers and told that America should just mind its own business.

The sad truth about most African nations is that their internal turmoil doesn't pose a genuine threat to world security. Regional stability between African nations doesn't have the same impact as a middle eastern, european or asian country that would choose to invade it's neighbor or to inflict genocide against its own population.

Oh BTW, good story not enough of this gets out to the public. I hear a lot of this where I work because I have coworkers that deploy and return from that region and we get a pretty unvarnished version of what's going on. Our branch chief just returned last week after 4 months in Baghdad.

He emailed a few time while he was deployed but I'm looking forward to hearing more about his trip.

Does this insight come from a veteran or someone who has chosen to observe from the sidlines and whine. Yes you are entitled to sit on the bench and coach those who are out in the field but there is little comparison to the knowledge gained by hands on experience. One must consider the overall threat of a nation or continent toward the US. Historically Africa has been so busy with infighting that not much threat has left the shores but the middle east has always swarmed with threat and hostility outside its borders, specifically toward us. Should we help all? Sure/maybe/why? but then I am sure we would hear complaints by the same armchair quarterbacks about our presence in the country they belive we are currently neglecting. We can agree to disagree but if your ever in NC we can have a smoke and no doubt have good conversation. So, In short, there is no good answer just pick your poison. For me, I'm with George
