I cam across this term and after doing a search couldn't really find a good def. What exactly is purging a cigar, how do you do it, and why?

Thanks

when you exhale (blow) through the cigar - the exact opposite of puffing on it. You blow the smoke out through the ash (so knock off the ash before you do it) and you push a lot of the lingering smoke out of it and it helps clear it up and gives you a fresher taste. It also applies air to the embers in a different direction and I've experienced that it helps the burn. I've heard of holding a flame to the cigar as you do this - the smoke/residue that comes in contact w/ the flame will make it spark, but I don't know of any benefits to doing this (using a lighter when you purge) - maybe someone else does...

Do you really need to 'burn off' the impurities? If they're getting pushed out of the cigar - who cares if they burn (besides the fireworks display)

I purge just after lighting and occasionaly when the stick get too hot on the last one to two inches.

Be wary of purging too much. Although it does improve some burn, it can over humidify the last part of your smoke.

purging has never improved my burn UNLESS i held a flame to it. there are times when i've purged without the flame, and mere seconds later when i go to take a drag it's completely OUT. i just always attributed this to the fact that i'm smothering the embers with carbon dioxide. using the 'flame' approach does however seem to get the stick burning good again if it was beginning to die out
