Hello all, finally decided to test the waters here. I've been lurking for a while, smoking cigars for 14 years, and only found cigarbid a couple of months ago -what a putz, paying full price when a smooth auction site was out there!

I've read the whole newbie post several times since, well, you guys are brutal pulling out that dead horse (is using the term "dead horse" a dead horse? - nevermind).

Couple of cigar questions, some kinda dumb, but I'm just curious:

Is Punch pronounced punch or poonch?

Just received my first Gurkhas yesterday - a Gurkha Master Sampler. The cigars all have a little sticker on the cell wrapper, telling me what I'm smoking (Regent, Master Select, etc). I want to take them out of the cell to get them in my humi - any suggestions on how to not get the five different smokes confused when I remove the cellophane?

I've smoked several cigars recently where an entire side simply won't burn and the tobacco looks a little strange - almost like a little bundle of sticks?

Lastly, I'm currently building a house and got permission/blessing for a built-in humidor in my bar. Got several boxes in mind to fill it, but wanted a suggestion on favorite strong cigars in the $100 per box price range, something along the lines of Joya De Nicaragua Antanos (one of my favorites).

Thanks

WHEW!! Where to begin? I'll start off with welcome I guess.

AS far as the pronunciation: I guess it would be poonch, but you might sound a little pretentious doing that since I think everyone calls them punch.

The second one is realy easy:don't remove the cello (BTW that was a pretty sneaky way of sneaking in that dead horse question intoo your newbie post)

For the third question: It could be a humidification problem or possibly you did not light it correctly, or maybe the roll of the cigar was messed up. I've only had this happen once and I was glad I was alone cause it looks stupid

and finally....Unfortunately I'm not in the position to buy any $100 boxes but if I had my druthers, I would get a box of CAO Brazilia's and a box of LGC series R #7 maddies.

Have fun this place is great

Hey man,

Punch is punch. Never heard em called poonch, although have heard that a robusto should be pronounced roboosto.

Don't know about the Gurkha's. Leaving the cello on won't hurt em though.

Fuller bodied sticks in the $100 range? Hmmm. There's a lot out there, but Camacho Corojo comes to mind. The new Partagas Spanish Rosado is very nice. You might give Montecristo Afrique a try, but is more medium bodied. CAO is always nice. Perdomo is nice too. I am particularly fond of Camacho SLR. There's a lot more. I'll leave the gaps to someone else.

Oh yeah! The last thing I smoked that looked like a stick was from Thailand, about 30 years ago 🙂

it is roboosto. Most cigars are have spanish nomenclature therefore when pronouncing them you should use their pronunciation. That being said, if no one else is doing it you might look stupid or pretentious. Here is a vowel chart with how you pronounce vowels in spanish

u=oo as is toot

a= o as in tot

e=a as in fate

i=ee as in feet

o=o as in tote

no matter what they are always pronounced this way. therefore punch is probably pronounced poonch.

Welcome kblitz,

On the Punch question.........Always Punch.

The brand uses the old English charater of Punch as a trademark. I've never heard it refered to as Poonch & Judy.

Welcome to cigarbid!

You could of course fill your new humidor with Gurkhas. It's a great smoke and the Expedition Toro has quickly become one of my favorites. Another great choice would be the Hoyo Dark Sumatra. Have you tried the Partagas Black series? Another good smoke!

Check out the Cbid All Star Samplers - I won an 8 cigar sampler for $15! You can't beat the price, and it's all decent stuff: Torano, Perdomo, CAO etc.

Yo kblitz:

Welcome aboard the board.

You could cut the cello to expose the foot.

The proper pronunciation is poonch, a friend told me that as we were eating loonch just last week.

Thanks all for the welcomes and the suggestions on smokes - can't wait to light one up a loonch today.

Wasn't trying to throw you guys off with the dead, maimed, beaten, rode hard and put up wet, (what else? ummmm...oh yeah) poor, kicked, slammed horse comment 🙂

Looks like about even on punch/poonch. Would I rather be a redneck or snob? Hmmmm... born, raised and live in Alabama, I'll go with punch. I know some of you couldn't sleep lastnight waiting for my decision.

Seth, it's going to be a built-in humi, not walk-in. I've got something like this in mind (thanks boofa75):

http://www.cigarbid.com/auction/forum/forum.cfm?action=list&forumID=7&messageDisplay=0000000022943

Also, thanks for the heads up on the all-star sampler. I've got a lot of time before I have to decide and I don't have a huge amount of resources, so I want the 4-5 boxes I finance for 30 years as part of my mortgage to be perfect!

JonR, excellent idea on cutting the cello. I had a hoonch someone on this board would come up with something! (BTW, my 3-year-old son likes to takes my cigars out to smell them, which is why they might've got displaced!)

Looks like some good suggestions on the smokes, will definitely try some Toranos and Perdomo2 maddies and the Partagas Black series - all virgin smokes to my mouth.

Welcome aboard... The question of the discolored wrapper that doesn't burn right may be caused by not rotating your smokes. If you let them age for a long time I've read they need to be rotated. I could be wrong though.

Jeff,

Price was misquoted by the liberal media.

Wife: Are those men hand-rolling those cigars darling?

Price: Oh they're rolling 'em sweetheart. They are rolling.

He was fired by UA for passing out Hav-A-Tampas to recruits and not using CBid to buy his own premium smokes. 🙂
