Is there anything I can use other than Spanish cedar to make different cabinets and such into suitable humi's? I can get 10sq ft of SC for about $50 but Im looking to go cheaper if possible. Do you have to use SC or can you line a cabinet with some sort of plastic?

Thanks,

Josh

Ya use Spanish Cedar for it's moisture retention and regulating properties. Spend the $$. You will be much happier.

I have heard that mahogany (spelling?)is also a cigar friendly wood, but I have not used it personally. I enjoy the smell of spanish cedar, but the price can suck.

Spanish Cedar is also used for it natural ability to repell insects and help season the cigars as they age ...

... and yes, you can use 'Honduran' Mahogany, which is the only Mahogany recommended for lining humidors.

Thanks guys. I looked into the Honduran Mahogany as well and its pretty much the same price. I wondered if you could use a plastic type material since that seems to work for coolidors?

Thanks,

Josh

misterzippo --- all these coolerdors, tupperdoors, etc. are nothing more than a cheap alternative to the genuine humidor. They are used mainly for overstock, not as a primary humidor.

Sure, you can store your cigars in just about anything ... but it's not going to be a humidor. The Spanish Cedar is used for a reason ...

... so if you want to do it right, then fork out the cash for the wood ... heck, you spend top $$$ for your cigars ... why store them in a substandard home?

Since you are going to all the trouble to retrofit something that wasn't meant to be a humidor in the first place ... why not at least give it the cedar lining to make it 'somewhat' into what a humidor was designed to accomplish?

The cedar lining has a purpose ... use it!

BTW --- most of the folks I know that have coolerdoors, etc. line them with Spanish cedar ...

or, instead of lining the coolidor with cedar, using them to store lots of boxed cigars in SC boxes, and just using one or two trays to hold singles, that way the boxes provide the regulatory and aging benefits, without having to line the coolidor. JMHO!

Retro may not be a great idea. The moisture difference in to out could wreck a cabinet over time.
