I am going to build a cabinet style humidor. I want to line it with cedar. The Home depot sells toungue and grove cedar for closets. is this the same as spanish cedar?

What ever you do, donot, I REPEAT DO NOT use aromatic cedar. Look for spanish cedar, it is much more expensive, and a much milder wood. Aromatic cedar is just TOO STRONG.

i know someone that used the cheap aromatic cedar. He gave me a bag of smokes for the troops and i swear it smelled like a cedar hanger. I could not even put in the tupperware with others cause it stunk up the place. I had to lay them out and air out and destroy the ziplock he gave them to me in and they still smelled imo. DO NOT DO IT! if they retain that much of the smell of a sweater on storage in a cabin on a lake - just think how they taste after time...

of course the boys in iraq probably didnt care but still. Not a good idea.

I sure agree with all the suggestions above. Don't touch that stuff!

As for a (Good Cheap) place to buy spanish cedar, I recommend doing a google search it will turn up a bunch of results for spanish cedar online for you.

Not sure if this was mentioned above, but spanish cedar is a hardwood, not a softwood like the cedar we see at our local Home Depot. If they were interchangable or even close I would be flush with cash from all the coolerdors out there. I also would have an awesome use for all of the cedar mill ends I have accumulated!

Cheers,

The Tree: Cedrela Fissilis Family ---

This species grows almost everywhere in Central and South America and is known by a wide variety of names. The family consist of about seven species.

An interesting fact about Spanish cedar is that it is not really a cedar at all. In fact, it is a deciduous tree.

The oils in the heartwood do have a distinct cedar smell, so I suppose that is how it got named. These trees average 100 feet in height with 6 foot diameters.

The Amazon Indians chose these trees to carve their canoes.

Applications for the wood also include craft projects, high-end cabinetry and furniture, clothing chests, interior joinery, patterns, lead pencils, boat building, canoe decks and musical instrument parts ... and of course, lining humidors.

If you are using this for the interior of a humidor, make sure that your supplier is only shipping the non weepy, variety. One species has a lot of sap (I can't remember which one that is) and can cause problems when the temperature is elevated within your humidor.
