Stalin ordered the death of thousands of people, including, at one point, some 30,000 in his own army, including about half of the officers. He ordered the execution of 800 political opponents at one point, accusing them of various crimes and sending them to their deaths without a trial. He forced milions of ethinic minorities out of the country. He underestimated Germany, ignoring a personal message from Winston Churchill in 1941 that attack from Germany was imminent (he didn't believe it would occur until 1942) and left important cities insufficiently protected. Irate, he called the leader of the military in Minsk and that leader's two top generals to Moscow and had them shot.

In addition to the thousands he had killed, he imprisoned many thousands more, without trial, and based on his say-so that they were somehow guilty of some sort of conspiracy against the government.

I could go on, but if you're trying to compare Stalin to any modern-day ruler, I'm having trouble seeing that claim as anything other than a variation of accusing someone of behaving like Hitler. Even some of the most dangerous and/or inept leaders of countries such as North Korea and Zimbabwe have a ways to go to match Stalin's ruthless reign of terror.

once again the ignorance of the american edumecation syestems shines brightly. the czars were not atheist commie pigs. in fact, they were quite the opposite. stalin hated the traditional system in russia, which is why he executed millions and sent millions more to death camps.

comparing stalin to obama is just ludicrous. both parties in the u.s. have the people in chains. but it seems to work very well. the pendulum swings back and forth. republicans, just relax, your turn will come soon enough.

Please try to keep the rational commentary to a minimum. It takes all the fun out of it and undermines all the hard work that went into finding just the right picture of Stalin, adjusting it to fit the CBid size limits, etc.

I'm not defending Stalin's horrific acts while he was in charge, but you have to balance the books. Of all the Allied leaders, with the exception of Roosevelt and Churchill, Stalin recognized Hitler for what he was. In fact, Stalin had read Mein Kampf and immediately recognized that Russia was in Hitler's gunsights. He even tried to forge an alliance with the West before World War II but was rebuffed. He then forged a non-aggression pact with Germany instead. His aim was to build up Russia's army, which he had weakened by his constant purges. He thought he had enough time with Hitler involved in a war with France and England. Nobody thought that France would collapse so quickly but still, Stalin thought that England would keep Hitler busy for a while. He ignored warnings from England and his own spies that Hitler was about to start "Operation Barbarosa." The important thing to note is that 3 out of every 5 German soldiers who died during WW II was in Russia. Stalingrad was the beginning of the end for Hitler and, as Churchill (who hated the Communists) said, "It was Russia that tore the guts out of the German Army." Just imagine Normandy if Hitler had the troops and equipment he lost in Russia. And, when it looked like Germany was about to take Moscow, Stalin remained in the city and even gave a speech to the troops defending the city. He may have been evil, but he had guts.

By the way, the only Generals in WW II who had never been defeated in battle were Georgi Zhukov of the Russian Army and our own General Patton. Zhukov defeated Germany in Moscow, Leningrad, Stalingrad and Kursk. At Stalingrad he destroyed the entire Sixth Army of the German Wermacht.
