I believe you paid the store keeper a sum of money, probably 1 to 5 cents and got to "Push" out a button. Behind the buttons were names of things you won, or possibly won nothing.

I wonder if that's how the term "no cigar" originated?

the term no cigar as i was told by a vet BOTL came about from the old slot machines. they used to pay out in cigars.

My grandfather owned 2 drugstores during the 30's-50's, and these were a regular staple. My parents used to pick these up cheap at rummage sales in the 70's, and let my brother and I play them.
