NEW YORK – Republican gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino told Orthodox Jewish leaders on Sunday he doesn't want children "brainwashed into thinking that homosexuality" is acceptable.

Paladino, who has received tea party support, made the comments at a synagogue in Brooklyn's Williamsburg section while trying to strike a contrast between himself and his Democratic rival, state Attorney General Andrew Cuomo. Paladino said he chose not to march in this summer's gay pride parade but his opponent did.

"That's not how God created us," Paladino said of being gay, "and that's not the example that we should be showing our children."

He added that children who later in life choose to marry people of the opposite sex and raise families would be "much better off and much more successful."

"I don't want them to be brainwashed into thinking that homosexuality is an equally valid and successful option," he said.

He skipped one line from his prepared text in his speech at the synagogue: "There is nothing to be proud of in being a dysfunctional homosexual."

Paladino's campaign manager, Michael R. Caputo, told The New York Times that the candidate is not anti-gay.

He said Paladino was "simply expressing the views that he holds in his heart as a Catholic."

"Carl Paladino is not homophobic, and neither is the Catholic Church," he said.

The only problem with Carl Paladino is that he's running for gov. in New York, and not in another state. For once we have a politician who is speaking the truth, and not backing down.

Anyone who votes for that low-life Cuomo really needs to have their head examined.

ya... the line appears to be drawn. If you don't vote for Carl Paladino your a gay-homo or a gay-homo sypathizer... seems pretty clear to me...

jpotts, you are one of the few on this board that makes me feel like a liberal. Being in NY and following the campaign closely I can tell you that no matter how red your blood runs, Paladino is crazy. I am all for up ending the status quo, but not at the expense of voting in some one who is clearly mentally unbalanced. I was a big Lazio supporter and come from his neighborhood. Once he was out and Paladino was in, I started to do a little research to find out who he is and what he's about. What I found was that he needs to get his ass kicked. He is a bullying douche who throws unfounded accusations around and plays the "angry crazy guy" to try to appeal to the "angry crazy voters". He is nothing. He has no platform on education, health care, unemployment, or anything else. He just gets pissy and tells people he is going to "take them out". Patterson sucks, Lazio dropped out. Given the choice between Cuomo and Paladino - I gotta go Cuomo.

First, cite one of his "crazy" notions.

Second, when it comes to "bullying douches" in New York, Paladino is N-O-T-H-I-N-G compared to the Cuomos. He doesn't even come close.

And frankly, a few members of the media need to be "taken out." They're scumbags.

Oh I don't know........

Paladino admittedly forwarded improper and offensive e-mails among a circle of friends, mostly in the construction industry.Campaign manager Michael Caputo initially stated that the authenticity of some of the e-mails could not be verified and the site that initially broke the story has been accused in the past of forging e-mails pertaining to another scandal.Paladino later acknowledged that some of the e-mails were authentic, but denied that he originated any of them, saying that he was "somewhat careless" about forwarding them to others.Content of the emails in question includes video of dancing African tribesmen under the title "Obama Inauguration Rehearsal", a video titled "Miss France 2008 ****", an altered image of President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama dressed as a pimp and a prostitute, an image of a cargo plane landing in an African desert behind a group of panicked men titled "Run, N*****s, Run!" and a video portraying a woman engaged in copulation with a horse Paladino admitted many of these emails were "off-color" and could be considered offensive, took responsibility for them, and apologized to "the ladies".

And while a few or more members of the media are certainly scumbags, I would like to think my candidate for Gov isn't likely to be charged with assault or manslaughter during his term.

Paladino seems like the type of guy to use NYS Troopers to invade NJ or CT.

I have enough angry old Italian Uncles i my family who I have to worry about geting into brawls on the street. I don't want my Gov acting lower than they do.

Cuomo's may very well be shady and have some less than savory connections, but I did well during his fathers run as Gov and I don't mind a little behind the scenes dirt. Paladino scares me. If that is the face he puts on in public, what is he like in private?

Gosh. That sounds even worse than when Chuck Schumer had his office staff rip off Michael Steele's personal information.

Or how about when Cuomo went running to Bill Clinton to bully McCall out of the gov. race back in 2002? Yes, sending racist stuff about Obama is bad, but two powerful white politicians trying to bully a black guy out of office obviously isn't.

Or how about when Cuomo body-checked Paterson - a black gov. - out of the primary? And the allegations he was spreading rumors about Paterson, just to cripple him in the primary?

And while a few or more members of the media are certainly scumbags, I would like to think my candidate for Gov isn't likely to be charged with assault or manslaughter during his term.

I guess the Village Voice says it best:

http://www.villagevoice.com/2010-02-02/news/the-reinvention-of-andrew-cuomo/

They also sparked an electric shock of recognition: Oh, right, a lot of folks were suddenly reminded. That Andrew Cuomo. The bad-talking twentysomething who played the big-shot bully in the big office when his father, Mario, was governor. The kid they called the "Prince of Darkness." That Andrew Cuomo.

Yeah. Andrew is someone I'd want in political office given his history. 🙄

Cuomo's may very well be shady and have some less than savory connections, but I did well during his fathers run as Gov and I don't mind a little behind the scenes dirt. Paladino scares me. If that is the face he puts on in public, what is he like in private?

Ok, here's where you're confused: guys like Paladino are the same way in private as they are in public. If this guy had any concern for whatever skeletons might be hanging in his closet, he wouldn't say the stuff he's saying. He'd have "handlers," which people like Hillar Clinton have. He is what he is. Frankly, you should be thanking the Lord Almighty that someone like that is taking up this fight.

But according to you, you'd rather have a guy who talks nicely to your face, and tell you what you want to hear, and then f**k you when your back is turned. Frankly speaking, that's outright insane. They've had those kinds of people running things in Detroit for the last 30 years, and look at where they've gone.

I've been where New York is going: people with money (read: your tax base) are fleeing your state. They are unlikely to come back. If you think that you did well because Mario was in office, that Andrew will bring the same, you're going to be in for a bit of a surprise. Mario had a better economic climate, and people weren't fleeing the state with their wealth during that period. Plus, one of your main revenue generators - specifically: Wall Street - wasn't being hammered by the federal government.

We've had a similar experience in Michigan when a phoney well-spoken, utterly corrupt politician took office during a downturn in economic activity namely: Jennifer Granholm. The end result is that people fled the state in droves. Now, we're wallowing in an economic cesspool. If that's what you want, by all means vote for Cuomo.

You're right, I'm no expert in New York politics. However, I've got enough experience with people like Paladino to know that he generally says what he means, and means what he says. I've also got a lot of experience with people like Cuomo, who generally makes everything miserable for the people around them (but never themselves). And frankly, someone taking a bat to some of these utterly corrupt political institutions is far preferrable to the inevitable loss of property, and income, and freedoms. Your state is beginning to collapse around you, and the notion that the same idiots that collapsed the state are somehow going to fix it is bereft of reason.

But please, vote for the phoney. It ain't my future or fortune that's at stake.
