WASHINGTON (December 1, 2010) - A new report from the Center for Immigration Studies examines the costs and likely impact of the DREAM Act currently being considered by Congress. The act offers permanent legal status to illegal immigrants up to age 35, who arrived in the United States before age 16, provided they complete two years of college. Under the act, beneficiaries would receive in-state tuition. Given the low income of illegal immigrants, most can be expected to attend state schools, with a cost to taxpayers in the billions of dollars. As both funds and slots are limited at state universities and community colleges, the act may reduce the educational opportunities available to U.S. citizens.

Assuming no fraud, we conservatively estimate that 1.03 million illegal immigrants will eventually enroll in public institutions (state universities or community colleges) as a result of the DREAM Act. That is, they met the residence and age requirements of the act, have graduated high school, or will do so, and will come forward.

On average each illegal immigrant who attends a public institution will receive a tuition subsidy from taxpayers of nearly $6,000 for each year he or she attends for total cost of $6.2 billion a year, not including other forms of financial assistance that they may also receive

The Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act (The "DREAM Act") is a piece of proposed federal legislation in the United States that was first introduced in the United States Senate on August 1, 2001[1] and most recently re-introduced there and the United States House of Representatives on March 26, 2009. This bill would provide certain illegal and deportable alien students who graduate from US high schools, who are of good moral character, arrived in the U.S. illegally as minors, and have been in the country continuously and illegally for at least five years prior to the bill's enactment, the opportunity to earn conditional permanent residency if they complete two years in the military or two years at a four year institution of higher learning. The illegal alien students would obtain temporary residency for a six year period. Within the six year period, a qualified student must have "acquired a degree from an institution of higher education in the United States or [have] completed at least 2 years, in good standing, in a program for a bachelor's degree or higher degree in the United States," or have "served in the uniformed services for at least 2 years and, if discharged, [have] received an honorable discharge."[2] Military enlistment contracts require an eight year commitment, with active duty commitments typically between four and six years, but as low as two years.[3][4] "Any alien whose permanent resident status is terminated [according to the terms of the Act] shall return to the immigration status the alien had immediately prior to receiving conditional permanent resident status under this Act." [5]


It should also be noted that this is a bi-partisan bill sponsored by Orrin Hatch (R) and ****** Durbin (D)

Here's the dirty little secret...

Most illegal aliens,Central Americans in particular don't want to be made citizens.They're happy to remain under the radar.To be paid in cash under the table,therefore they pay not income taxes,property taxes and still reap the benefits.

The only reason liberal Democrats push for illegal alien amnesty is to generate millions of additional lifetime Democratic voters in the entitlement pipeline.

The vast majority of illegals could care less...

The point is moot. I have no doubt the liberals who push amnesty for illegals legislation are motivated by their perceived opportunity to add another couple of million Democratic voting dependent souls to the population...regardless of how hard working and independent the illegals might turn out to be once they are citizens.

They won't seek citizenship even if it's offered...

After attending college with so many foreign born students that are here legally I don't see many negatives to allowing current illegal’s to attend college on the federal dime over other foreign born students that are here legally who get grants and other forms of government money to attend college in the US.

I wish I was an illegal alien. I didn't get to go to college because I couldnt afford it. But its ok. I make more then most people I know that went to college. All I have to do is never lose my job.
