Obama Signing Child Nutrition Bill Into Law

WASHINGTON -- President Obama is signing into law legislation to provide more lunches and dinners to school children and make those meals healthier.

Speaking at an elementary school in the District of Columbia, Obama says the legislation is about doing what is right for America's children and helping them reach their full potential. He applauded bipartisan lawmakers for passing the bill, saying it shows that both parties can come together on issues that matter for the future of children and the future of the nation.

Michelle Obama has been a supporter of the bill as part of her initiative to combat childhood obesity
. The first lady joined the president at the bill signing.

The $4.5 billion measure would expand free school meals for the needy and give the government the power to decide what kinds of foods may be sold in schools.

Sometimes I wonder how the nation's children ever managed to survive at all for the 150 or so years before the government got into the education business...kids walked to and from a local school, walked home at lunch time and ate there or brown bagged a lunch if they lived too far away from the school, and consequently weren't fat other than the one or two in every class that inevitably got called 'Porky' or 'Chubby' and nobody got expelled or dosed with Ritalin for it.

Ah the good ole days, when everything was perfect. By golly, things were just PERFECT back then. Of course, the average life span was much shorter, and the number one killer of men was industrial accidents (getting killed on the job is SO chinese!). Keep moving backwards, that's what I always say!
