Funny you should mention that.
My kids were watching some kids news thing on Niceloden, with Linda Ellerbee as host. One of the kids they spotlighted was getting free school lunches because his mother was on public assistence. His mother was a diabetic and, for some unexplain reason, was disabled to the point where she couldn't work. As the report went, they noted that the kid sometime had to go hungry because he'd only get two meals a day on average, and those came from the school lunch program (or whatever they're calling it now).
The only problem with that statement was that the kid was some 20 lbs overweight.
Then there was a cashier I saw at a local Kroger who was advising a foreigner about what foods were and were not accepted by the WIC program (I think that was the one). I'll tell you this: it was pretty clear that she wasn't starving to death. In fact, it'd take about 50 years before she reached that point.
Childhood obesity is a problem. It is most likely spawned by these food giveaway programs instituted by the federal government.
