Koch Brother Buys the Right to Interfere in Faculty Hiring at Florida State University
Wednesday 11 May 2011
by: Kris Hundley, The St. Petersburg Times

A conservative billionaire who opposes government meddling
in business has bought a rare commodity: the right to interfere
in faculty hiring at a publicly funded university.

A foundation bankrolled by Libertarian businessman Charles G. Koch
has pledged $1.5 million for positions in Florida State University's economics
department. In return, his representatives get to screen and sign off on any
hires for a new program promoting "political economy and free enterprise."

Traditionally, university donors have little official input into choosing the person
who fills a chair they've funded. The power of university faculty and officials to
choose professors without outside interference is considered
a hallmark of academic freedom.

I don't see the problem.

He funded the chair - he wants input into who fills it. The university did not have to accept his money. they could have turned down the offer and looked for someone who would not interfere but they didn't. They accepted the terms and conditions.

Frnakly the fact he is conservative doesn't matter to me. If a liberal funded a chair and wanted the same input I would still feel the same way.

It's perfectly OK when the government mandates PC bullsh*t classes for colleges that accept government scholarship money...but d@mn, I hate it when conservatives finally get their way for once.
