Mitt Romney's beach house, it seems, is not big enough, so the former Massachusetts governor plans to nearly quadruple the size of his family’s beach digs facing the Pacific Ocean in La Jolla, California.

The $12 million manse is currently about 3,600 square feet. But Romney has filed plans to demolish the existing structure and replace it with an 11,062-foot home.

Romney’s campaign acknowledged the construction plans, saying the Republican front-runner needs to expand the home "because, with five married sons and 16 grandchildren, it is inadequate for their needs. Construction will not begin until the permits have been obtained and the campaign is finished."

Is this going to become a campaign issue and fodder for critics, just as John and Cindy McCain’s eight homes did in the last presidential campaign? Probably, but it shouldn’t.

It’s not as if Romney, the son of former Michigan governor George Romney, is running as a man of the people.

The GOP hopeful doesn’t exactly hide the fact that he’s been a successful businessperson. It’s one of the things that Romney has regularly touted when outlining his plans to get the economy moving and differentiating himself from his opponents.

So it should come as no surprise that the former Massachusetts governor can afford a bigger, better beach house to hang with his grandkids or that he’s willing to spend money to do it.

The bigger scandal will be how much the government will make him spend in obtaining the necessary permits.

Obama uses taxpayer money for a ten day vacation in Marthas Vineyard and that is OK.

I heard Obama is going to use taxpayer money to make Marthas Vineyard 4 times as big as it is. And he is adding a waterpark that gives free admission to welfare recipients.
