When I was in New Orleans in September, I was gifted a bottle of Louisiana Hot Sauce.

Although tasty, I looked at the ingredients and was surprised, when compared to Tabasco Hot Sauce.

Louisiana Hot Sauce ingredients are Cayenne Peppers, Distilled Vinegar, Salt, Guar, Sodium Alginate, Xantham Gums, Yellow Dye # 6 and Red Dye # 40.

For over 140 years, Original Tabasco Pepper Sauce has been made with just three natural ingredients: fully aged red peppers, Avery Island salt and high quality distilled vinegar. That's It.

All my bottles of Louisiana hot sauce are peppers, vinegar, salt. What kind of bottle did you find?

I prefer the cayenne peppers to tabasco peppers.

Maybe so, but this thread was about the ingredients of Louisiana Hot Sauce, compared to Tabasco Brand ...

One has all kinds of Guar, Sodium Alginate, Xantham Gums, Yellow Dye # 6 and Red Dye # 40 & the other has just 3 ingredients ... Peppers, Vinegar & Salt . . .

Now I'm craving fried fish . . .

Such a politically charged issue!

At their core, all hot sauces are peppers, preservatives(vinegar usually), and spices. Coloring/thickening/etc. are mostly about presentation/marketing. Tabasco peppers are nice and mild so you can get away with using a good amount. In really hot sauces that use capsaicin, there is a need to dilute things a lot and even then they're murderously spicy.

I really don't care about the ingredients if the sauce is good.

Tabasco is always in our house because it's called for in so many recipes.
If I'm just going to eat some tortilla chips with hot sauce, I prefer a thicker sauce like Cholula or El Yucatan.
If I'm looking for a painful day of dining I'll reach for a Dave's Insanity or one of the other crazy hot sauces.

My all-around favorite hot sauce is Melinda's XXXXtra Reserve. If it's important to you --> habanero peppers, carrots, onions, lime juice, vinegar, garlic, and salt

Not only wrong forum, but wrong title. You entitle the thread "hot" sauce, and discuss luke warm sauces (Louisiana & Tabasco), Sheesh.

Oh, I see Yardie mentioned "Dave's Insanity". Weak entry, but I think he saved the thread. HA!

I've had hotter, but must admit that they left me crying for my mommy.

So what sauce(s) do you recommend for maximum sphincter punishment?
