Norman Thomas is reported to have said this in a 1944 speech:

"The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism.
But, under the name of "liberalism," they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program,
until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.
" He went on to say: "I no longer need to run as a Presidential Candidate for the Socialist Party.
The Democratic Party has adopted our platform."

Norman Mattoon Thomas (November 20, 1884 - December 19, 1968)
was a leading American socialist, pacifist, and six-time presidential candidate for the Socialist Party of America.

Depends what he means by '"liberalism"' and what has changed in our society since 1944.

If he meant the liberal ideology of the democrat party and how it was changing then yes.

But true liberalism no.

But members of the right are just as guilty of this with socialist "light".

Like it or not, it's the America we have now and it ain't getting better. Obama and Romney have no plans to make things better.....business as usual for both. Ron Paul, albeit a little wacko, would have made significant changes (if allowed). Not sure where it would take us but it would be different.
