He has a very good lawyer who has handled death cases and who has 25 years criminal law experience (unlike Jose Baez). I predict that there will be some real big-shot lawyers brought on as well. A lot of third-party money will come to Zimmerman's defense by various groups.
There was a split within the police department whether to arrest. Original prosecutor chose not to even go out to the scene the night of the shooting. Racism claim will backfire now that we learn the tape of the 911 cal was "doctored".
Judge currentlyassigned to the case is firm, very bright, decisive and fare. I donated money to her judicial campaign and had her campaign sign on my lawn for months. She was just elected last year, so her term has five (5) more years before she has to run again. Although she used to be a prosecutor and then Allstate Counsel, she wasn't a "true believer". Her husband works for the most well-known criminal lawyer in Central Florida. I am sure she has learned allot from him about what being a lawyer for real people is like. Freedom of Information Act will require release of most info and evidence within a few months. Oh, and by the way, the Judge is... Hispanic (which won't matter).
Biggest issues will be the autopsy, type of gun used, etc. They will probably seize his computer to see if he ever researched or wrote about this defense to murder. Let's see if there were any witnesses to any of this or possibly a security camera.
My guess right now, if nothing is new and the evidence doesn't strongly defeat Zimmerman's claims, is that both sides will try to negotiate a deal for less than manslaughter with minimal jail time. The custom here is negotiated pleas involve consent of the victim. But, when victims are totally unreasonable, they get ignored. Very little physical evidence of little complexity. Statements of perhaps a few neighbors who called 911 and Zimmerman's statements to cops after Miranda warnings. Gonna be interesting!
