I'm familiar with the way the right wing media framed this thing and it's cute the way it's parroted as if it's true. The vitriol aimed at union employees is classic scape-goating as these union members are not 'thugs', they are your neighbors, teachers, police and many of the people you rely on for the stuff you do and use daily.
The benefits they recieve are agreed to by negotiated contracts and the employer agrees just as if they would agree to any other business deal. Because of these deals we are fortunate to have the 40 hour work week, child labor laws, work safety, health benefits etc. You know that some of these things are slipping away, less insurance, fewer vacation days, less pay, fighting to get rid of 'regulations' like safety laws, etc. And instead of fighting for everyone to have the right to a living wage, work safety, healthcare insurance et al, people are fighting to take it away from those who have it. We're going backwards.
In order to compete with China and other developing nations we don't have to regress to their level.
